NewBee Camellia Lover: Camellias eaten by hyper puppy
Comments (2)Sorry to hear that, gypzee_mama. My overactive Golden Retriever did the same thing while chasing squirrels a couple of years ago. In my case, the plant died but it is hard to tell what will eventually happen since no two injuries are identical. Treat the plant with TLC, just as if it had been transplanted. You can put some Elmer's Glue on injuries where the dog damaged it so insects or fungal infections will not cause additional harm. Make sure the plant gets some sun; trim nearby bushes to allow sun to reach the camellia plants. Do not force the plant to awaken from its dormancy by fertilizing it now. In Spring, provide it fertilizer in the form of Liquid Seaweed, Fish Emulsion and/or SuperThrive only. Your plants are going to be in shock for a while and fertilizing plants that are in shock does not help. Seaweed and Fish Emlsion are weak fertilizers similar to coffee grounds. If there is leaf growth by May-June, add half a cup of cottonseed meal (or 1/2 what you normally apply) and fertilize no more for 2008. Maintain the soil as evenly moist as possible and keep 3-4" of mulch. If there is no growth by May-June, replace the plants. Good luck, Luis...See MoreWANTED: FtMyers Super Swap Soiree 9/02
Comments (150)Cindee, I am not really good at posting pictures yet. I hope this works. This is something I made for your swap. I don't know how you want to either give it away or what but it is yours to do whatever you want. The plants inside are called "Cryptanthus" or Pink Starlite. Comments (27)I'm a big fan of my Chemex pour-over. There are for sure some downsides. Most notably, it's not a push a button and leave sort of deal. Due to this, though, you control the water temperature, and pour, because it's your own hand doing it. It also uses proprietary filters that aren't the easiest to get. I live in downtown Boston and have found a few places within walking distance that carry them. But it's not a matter of going to your local supermarket and grabbing them off the shelf. Coffee geeks also will note often that said proprietary filters impart a "papery" taste into the coffee. I do a rinse with about a cup of hot water and then dump it down the drain before I add my grounds and that takes care of any sort of taste. The final plus? I think it looks beautiful sitting on my counter :)...See MoreChicken liver lovers
Comments (24)Seagrass, I looked at a bunch of methods I found on the Web and picked the simplest one. Lots of recipes call for adding onions or apples to the fat, but I wanted to try it first without adding another flavor, so mine is just fat and nothing else. All you do is collect the fat trimmings each time you make chicken and save them in the freezer till you have at least a couple of cups' worth. If you remove the skin before you cook chicken, you can add cut-up pieces of that as well. Then just put it all in a heavy skillet over low to medium heat and let it melt slowly, watching so it doesn't burn. Some recipes said to add water to the skillet, but I didn't. As the fat liquefies, you can pour it off into a container. Eventually all that will be left are the pieces of skin, which you can cook till they get brown and curly. Then, if you're suicidal, you can eat those. They're called "gribenes" in Yiddish, and they're as delicious as they are lethal. The melted fat gets poured through a very fine sieve, or even a coffee filter if you're compulsive (I was). I have almost all the schmaltz I made that first and only time still in my freezer. I'm not sure how long it's supposed to keep, but it seems fine, and that was quite a while ago. I guess I could make more if I needed it. It's not something we use a lot of, but it's comforting to know I have some if there's ever a national schmaltz emergency....See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
