Help with a long narrow living room
Comments (8)We are open to getting a new couch, but I wanted to come up with a layout I like first before committing to a purchase. We did have the TV console along the wall next to the fireplace and floated the couch in the center of the room, but it cut the room in half and when guests would come over they tended to only hang out in the area behind the couch (where we have the couch now). We are trying to figure out a way to open the room up so when we entertain, our guests will use the couch. But due to the trickiness of the room we are having a hard time trying to com up with a layout. I thought about putting the TV on the wall where we have the couch now, get a 3 seat sofa and put it under the kitchen cutout and a chair (or oversized chair) and put it on the wall with the fireplace. Wasn’t sure if it would look funny to have a chair right next to the fireplace.......See Morehelp decorating yet another 1920s living room with limitations
Comments (41)So much creativity and so many good ideas. And I love seeing pictures. Susan Davis's of the way the orange was pulled throughout the room was helpful. On that note, her comment made me realize how much the rug in that room has faded. The rust used to be more red than it is now! I love the idea of moving a shelf. Never occurred to me. And the suggestions of where to look for art and rugs. I hate to confess this, though — this morning, before I went to work, I moved the sofa back to original position. Please don't hate me! I think Anele's comment about her living room arranged that way looking better in pictures than it did real life points to something. I thought the pictures of with the sofa floated made my living room look the best it ever had. The reality, not so much. From the pictures you just can't see the broad green Berlin Wall the back of the sofa makes. But don't give up on me! I may even float the sofa again before I go to work tomorrow at this rate. I'm mulling curtains (keep or change?), rug and art ideas, and maybe something less boxy that I could use as a media stand....See MoreHelp!: long living room with long bay window
Comments (2)You appear to have baseboard heat/ac beneath those windows. That's something that would need to be addressed if you build in a window seat and/or taken into account if you place your sofa in that window bay. One drawback to having a sofa floating in the middle of the room (as shown in your pic) is that there are no end tables with lamps (hidden cord issues) for either end of your sofa ... unless you're setting one end table between the sofa and the wall that separates the living room and kitchen. Your walk-thru path would then be between the sofa and the large window/window/seat. If you prefer the back of your sofa against the wall (with end tables on each end), another option might be to move the doorway between the living room and dining room closer to the fireplace and face your sofa toward and centered with the large window with a couple of swivel rockers and table between them in that window bay....See MoreLong narrow living room help
Comments (14)Eld Thanks for your advice. These were taken during the day but it was a gloomy day. The windows are large but with the balance and thickness of the curtains they limit the light in. Those windows do face the front of our house so I do want to be mindful of that. I thought slate because it pulls in the color from the fireplace. And I think I’d prefer to not have an accent wall in this room....See MoreMae Day Organizing and Interior Design
