Crocus speciosus flops over?
Comments (4)Hi flora, Actually, that bed is rather like an alpine bed with quite sharp drainage. Right now I've got a variety of Trillium, Hepatica, Jeffersonia dubia, Anemonella... along with Spring bulbs. Once the trees leaf out there will be lots of shade perennials. I may have to rethink my idea of wild geranium/fall crocus in that particular bed anyway because it may be too shady in Autumn. It's high shade but it may still be too much. I suppose I could make a new bed with lots of bulbs, spring and fall blooming. I've got a few Colchicum coming too --one each of six different kinds. (Because they're so expensive I want to see what they look like 'in person' and how well they do before investing any more money.) "Train my husband to steer around them"... You're an optimist, flora. He'd never let the grass grow high enough for the crocus leaves to die back naturally --at least not in front of our house where I'd originally planned to put them. So maybe a bed in back just for bulbs... Thanks very much for your suggestions....See Morebroccoli fine one day....3 flopped over the next
Comments (7)Cutworms are quite common in the garden and their damage is relatively easy to prevent. The most common tried and true method is to simply slide a thicker stick right along side the stem of the transplant. If the cutworm can't wrap around the stem with his body he can't damage it. Many folks use a big nail, a popsickle stick, a piece of a plastic drinking straw, a thick twig, etc. just use your imagination. Some also use collars made from all sorts of things - strips of aluminum foil, toilet paper rolls (though they get wet and cave in), strips of plastic, etc. They just need to fit up against the stem snugly but not tight enough to interfere with growth. And there is always corn meal but it has to be reapplied after rain. They eat it, swell up and die. Just Google 'cutworm control' for all sorts of tips and tricks. Comments (9)My problem resolved itself ... I just don't know how ... must have been the way my flatmate watered in my absence ... Still all three Amputo, of which one had two scrapes last year, haven't flowered jet. They are the only ones that made such a fuss, but I heard of Elizabeth that they're known not too be very eager to rebloom. pirhan wrote: "I water it once a week - drenching it in the sink. Our house is quite dry so I might be under watering it?" There's no way of saying how much you're supposed to water. It depends on the temperatures, the amount of light they're getting and also the humidity. I'd stick my finger in the pot before you water again. If it still feels cold and wet don't water....See MoreYoung peony 'flopping over'?
Comments (4)In my experience, peonies without much sun grow leaves ok but just don't bloom. I've grown 10 peonies in pots (just over a summer) and I found I was overwatering them in time to save the majority of them, but 2 rotted & died. Sue...See Moreostrich
