Help needed- My peace lily is almost dead

First, your tree is not going to die if you can purge your thought process of the idea wilting means the plant needs more water. Have faith in the idea that plants in a damp/moist medium will always be able to take up water more efficiently than plants in a wet/soggy medium. The recovery will take 1 of 3 paths. 1) New growth will stop and the leaves will remain in a wilted condition for a period of time until enough new roots are generated to meet the top's moisture needs, Soon after the plant regains turgidity (stops wilting) it will resume growth. 2) Many leaves will die due to the fact a lesser volume of roots isn't going to be able to meet the moisture demands of the pot, which will cause the plant to literally wall off the leaves to prevent further moisture loss, or 3) you could remove at least half of the existing leaves to easy the o/a demand for water. If you do that, concentrate on removing the oldest leaves. If you look very carefully. You'll see the younger leaves are attached to the crown above or closer to the center than attachment point of older leaves. Resume fertilizing when you see the plant pushing new growth. Comments (26)Hi SarahofLayton, I just want to welcome you and to say that your are in good company here. Many will give you great information and it will become easy to understand and really become confortable in your ability to understand what you plants needs are. They will tell you what and when and we are here to tend to those needs. Al has listed some links for you to read and i know you will find them useful. Don't worry if you need to reread them and take your time in soaking in all of this information. This is really a good time to learn and get aquainted in your knowledge for the care of all of your plants. The repotting will wait until Spring/summer, depending on where you live. So, don't feel that you need to take on to much now. : ) I remember the Ficus that Rina Had to tackle and she did a great job with that huge tree. She knew what she wanted to do. Then she learned what needed to be done with the help of many including AL. They did a great job on that tree. Great teamwork!!! : ) So relax, read and know that many here will help you, encourage you and teach you all that you would like to learn. I have learned so much here in the last few years and i am so glad to have found this forum and to have the support here. Many here have taught me and i can't thank them enough... including Al, Mike and many more.. Taking a tree and having the confidence to do whatever is needed is the most rewarding feeling when you know it will be happy in your hands. You will see such inprovement in the health of your trees. But remember, that they don't always respond to the repotting as fast as we would like to see, so don't worry. They have their own time to relax and get comfortable in their new enviroment. Hope you have great success! Your Peace Lily will be fine.. Looks great!! : ) Good Luck, Laura...See MoreWhat is wrong with my Peace Lily?
Comments (5)How large was the pot it was in? How large is the pot it's in now? The crown also looks a bit too deep, it needs to be lifted up. It looks like overwatering from potting in a much larger pot than it should be in. When you pot up only go up one or two sizes depending on the size of the pot it was in. any pot smaller than 1 gallon should be potted up one size, any over, can go up two sizes. You can do two things, water less until the plant grows into the pot (which could be years) or pot in a smaller pot, either way, there is probably root damage I would go with the second option. Put it back into the size it was before and cut off any mushy roots and sprinkle rooting hormone on them, or if you don't have that, cinnamon. Good Luck!...See MoreBrown spots on my peace lily leaves
Comments (2)..... very unlikely it's a light issue - very likely it's a soil choice/ over-watering issue, which is a very common source of limitation for this plant. Ideally, the plant would be in a soil you can keep moist w/o limiting oxygen in the root zone to the point it impacts root health/ function. That translates to a chunky soil with pores (macropores) large enough that they hold air instead of water - even very deep in the pot where more water-retentive soils tend to support several inches of saturation that eliminates the roots' oxygen supply and limits root function/ health.
