Comments (25)Second that on Building a Home forum. There are a number of builders and architects that do reviews on that forum. They leave the kitchens to this group. I like the second island much better. Primarily because the stools are only two by two instead of four in a row. Being able to face someone while seated makes for a much more social environment. That's a great improvement for that issue. Where is the pantry? Where is the food storage? You will need a prep sink. And, remember to design this with as many drawers in the base cabinets. Drawers are a much more efficient storage method....See MoreNew Build - Kitchen Design Input Please
Comments (10)I think you want specific answers to your questions, so: Combining questions 3 and 5, I'd have the coffee maker next to the fridge, because I take milk in my morning coffee. For the rest of that countertop, cookie jars. Filled with cookies. It's kind of useless for the kitchen, actually, so I'd use the space next to the refrigerator for dish storage, and the rest for special servers and the far end for a bar. Question 4: That's where I'd have a small bar sink, not a prep sink. But then, I've never had a prep sink so I can't speak to their need or placement. Question 6: For that perimeter space between the pantry and the pool door, I'd probably have patioware, the melamine trays and cute napkins and iced tea glasses and beer bottle openers that you carry out to the pool, and for placemats, napkins, and candles for the dining table. Question 2: looks like a lot of kitchens, but the placement is poor, being a pass-through. But I'm looking at it from the "I'm moving into this house that someone else built, where does my stuff go?", since HOW I use a kitchen wasn't taken into consideration. I've done enough moving into existing homes and having to change how I do things. If I were building my own home, I'd build it around how *I* do things, not how a drafter, or even the neighbors, do things....See MoreSeeking design input on U-shaped kitchen - lots of details provided!
Comments (29)Would you keep the cabinet next to the window if you used corner shelves? I would, and I'd also put a cabinet on the fridge side. You could also put the wine rack adjacent to that cabinet, a better location for it than as a base cabinet. Here are some narrow cabinets with attached shelves. 15" should be the minimum width for a wall cabinet. Here they've done a good job of integrating shelves next to a fridge with upper cabinets. The accent color paint is a really nice touch. I would build the fridge cabinet with a 36" counter depth fridge in mind. There will be fewer 30" choices in the future. Eliminating the 6" base wine rack would give you room for a 36". I'd also consider an 8-12" deep pantry that butts up to the side of the fridge with double doors opening in front of the doorway. A shallow side pantry is easier to store in than a counter depth pantry and is cheaper than a pull-out pantry. By using a side pantry, you could move the fridge down several inches and get more breathing room in your breakfast corner. You'll feel less squeezed in between the corner and the regular depth fridge. The side pantry could have open shelves up top for pottery or cookbooks....See MoreKW
