Should sconces be centered or equal distance to the hood?
Hi All,
We are finally ready to start our remodel. the electrician is coming on Monday and im concerned about where to place sconces. everything in the space except window and DW and sink are where they will be. sink will go in island with DW. Window will be walled in. on the right the tape designates a 36 inch pantry. also question on which side refrigerator should go. I like on the left but only have 12 inches to the left of it and am concerned about opening clearence. Hood is in the center. one more thing. should i have a wall to the right of the pantry or just have the pantry end it as the wall extends into the family room. we will have 12 foot slider to patio and the wall by stove right now will be removed so only the FP is between the two rooms.

Comments (7)Thank you all for the replies! Glad to know that you guys think a couple of inches is not a big deal. Good to know that baffle filters are good for grease. What's wrong with oil cups? All things being equal baffle definitely looks better for sure. What do you think of a smaller thinner hood with mesh filter, like the 400CFM Bosch DUH36252UC? Yes I am also concerned about field of view. The height of the future range is a standard size (36 inch). Our options are limited. Really don't want another downdraft -- the only downdraft range is Jenn-Air, expensive and also terrible reviews for its reliability. The only other option is a low profile hood with sliding glass visor. But that will eat up the cabinet above the range in kitchen already tight for space. :(...See MorePlease help! Comments (1)I would prefer the more balanced work space over arbitrary symmetry to an offset island. Plus, you don't want the stove and sink aligned if somebody might be working at each of them at the same time. Maybe a single pendant, over sink? or interesting semi-flush lights, if your hood and tile really merit center stage? (most are not *really* as dramatic as all that...)Hanging the lights a little on the high side seems to be a common solution... Also keep in mind that as you move about the room, different elements will be prominent to your eye, so it's ok to have lights that cross the visual of the hood, especially if you need the task lighting. Comments (15)Do you use your stove more than once or twice a week? Do you cook at high heat? Do you stir fry? Do you sear meat? Do you like to eat bacon? Do you plan on getting a gas stove? Is this your main house where you spend more than 90% of your time? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then you should make sure you get a venting solution that actually works and that minimizes smells and pollution. This almost always means you need a properly sized overhead hood and possibly a make up air system. A hood that vents outside is preferred, if at all possible. But if that isn't doable, then Vent-A-Hood is the only manufacturer that makes a recirculating (filtering) hood that hasn't gotten horribly poor reviews. A downdraft is rarely if ever a good solution in this situation. Comments (3)"The recommended distance for a hood is 20 to 24 inches above the cooktop." That is incorrect. The recommended distance is 30 to 36 inches above the cooktop. If a hood you are looking at has specs that recommend 20-24", that means it has very low cfms. Consequently, it needs to be installed quite low to work at all. I do not see the point of spending money on a hood that is underpowered and needs to be installed so low in order to function. I would look for the 36" hood that is 600 cfms, and install it with a distance of 30-36" above the cooktop. You said you have existing cabinetry. What is the distance from the cooktop to the bottom of the existing cabinetry? You may need to seek an undercabinet hood that is not taller than 7", depending on the cabinetry you have in place....See Moremcfadden62

last yearlast modified: last yearI played around with a couple mockups. I don’t think everything is quite to the right scale, and the fridge looks off. But, hopefully it will help you imagine what I meant with doing the third wall pendant light.
I am not sure if it is possible, but if the range could slide down so it is centered between the tall pantry and the window instead of to the island, I think that would look and function a little better.Either way I would make sure the dw is on the fridge side, so it is out of the island prep moving to the stove zone. Also if someone wants to help clean up or get into the dishwasher, they would not be so ”cheek to cheek” if another person was cooking at the stove. I would try for no less then 48” on the size of the isle. I would like even a few inches more if possible.

By the time I start playing around with the mockups I completely lose track of things. I am sure I read that about the window being walled up, but in one ear and out the other.
McFadden, since we are on the subject, is the reason you need to lose the window is to have more wall space for a cabinet or are you planning the open shelves all the way across? Do you plan the black cabinets like the inpiration kitchen? If so maybe the more light the better?
Crazy thought…Would you consider shelves across the window?
I could not find a great example with it just on one side, but just throwing it out there anyways. Hey I have embarrased myself already, so might as well. 🤣
Not a great mockup of what I mean. I tried to fix the shelves, but I think they might still look a bit cluttered. 😬
