Tilley Hats sizing

I decided to buy a hat, and I don't like baseball caps. I went to Winners, and the brimmed hats they had were really nice, and what I was looking for, but all too big.

I decided to check out the men's section and they had Tilleys.

I bought one size S 7. It fits snug.

Looking online, it's not supposed to fit snug, you're supposed to be able to fit 2 fingers inside the front. (I can't)

Also, checking out my hat, the grommet is unattached on both inside and outside, so the hole where the string goes though isn't protected.

I wrote to Tilley to see if it's covered and I heard back today, and it is. Instead of sending the hat back, I'm to destroy it, with pics that it is (crown cut off) and they will send me a replacement.

So I'd better go for the Medium which is slightly larger and I can get my finger in the front. (I used a string around my head.) Plus it will allow for any possible shrinkage if I wash it.

I bought my Tilley’s at the EAA Airshow in Oshkosh probably 30 years ago. Alex himself was there, but we just missed him at the shop. It’s a great hat, but I stopped wearing hats for the most part because they flatten my hair and I look like a wet cat. So I pulled it out just now, and…did my head grow? Or did it shrink? Just need to be stretched out? At any rate, at size 7 it’s too small!

But I reread the label. I guess we should update our wills. And it says it doesn’t shrink, so I must have a big head. must be my pride in my children.

My favorite by far is a conical rice farmer's hat (AKA Coolie Hat). It's extremely lightweight, cheap, and has an extremely wide brim. It's so wide that it provides total shade for my eyes, nose, my whole head, and even my neck, even when the sun is lower in the sky. No other hat that I've seen will do that. The only drawback is that it does have a tendency to blow off in the wind, but it has a strap which goes under the chin to prevent that (most of the time). I just moved to Denver. I thought with no rain my tubers would be up in no time. No way! In MA. where I came from, there were slugs, snails, rabbits, gophers, etc. to contend with. None of that here. Next year I will try plants for sure. They will have to be hardened off before I can plant them though. Corralto's is just plants. I use them sometimes.

Mahoney's sold some really nice wide-brimmed garden hats for men and women last year--don't know about this year. Also check out travel catalogs online such as Magellans and Travel Smith. Great quality on all their products and they sell a number of wide-brimmed hats, including styles with built-in SPF. I also bought a nice hat with a securing loop like our old cowboy/girl hats. It was from LL Bean and they may still have it. Alas, I went swimming in it and it seems it is not waterproof.... Wind is a factor to consider. Annoying to be gardening and have your hat keep blowing off. My most unusual hat story is from just a few months ago. I was touring the Villa Gamberaia north of Florence and my favorite hat blew off and into a renowned water feature. No one else was there but myself and a friend so I rolled up my pants and went wading. The Italian algae definitely adds a certain something to that particular hat.

Here you go gardenway--if you are making it for a 1 year old make it 16 to 19 inches around depending on the childs head size. Some kids have bigger heads than others. I also have a pair of Tilley’s shorts. They were great, back when they fit. (Having children took care of that.):And seemingly indestructible, but comfortable and actually not bad looking. With good pockets.

Bpath, they're now made in China sadly :-(

But the guarantee is still there for hats marked lifetime guarantee.

I’ve now lost all faith in humanity. Should I still keep the guarantee and instructions in the bottom dresser drawer?

Annie when I saw that I was crushed. I can see their point, buying one and keeping it AND getting a freebie. I thought it would good to have it as a back-up. Especially when I sent photos of the unfastened grommet.

DH has had his Tilley since 2013 bought it in Niagara on the Lake Canada . He loves it and it has seen a lot of sweat and machine washing.As @bpath has discovered even though DH’s head has not grown ( well it gets bigger when he gets compliments on his jazz piano playing) but aside from that over the years the hat is definitely smaller. He won’t ever stop wearing it but it is tighter. I do put it over the bottom of a cooking pot like my Momma did with Daddie’s ballcaps after washing. It does stretch it a bit as it dries. Definitely size up. Nothing is made like it used to be.

I just began reading this thread and I am confused.. The company exists, but they charge a lot for hats made in China.

I LIVE in Tilly hats by various makers. Some with ties, some not. Tennis brimmed hats are close. I have 8 or so and have lost others. I put my name and ph # inside.

No need to pay a lot. Go to a thrift store, $14. Got to a marine store, more money but with ties. When I spot them on sale, I buy 10 to 20 of them — ditto DH.

I like the khaki or navy blue. Cotton. brim has to stay put, not flop all over.

Good luck. Mine are ”medium” but I just found a white tennis hate, full brim, dark green beneath, 24 yrs old and bought for about $15 to $20. Too small for me cuz it likely got put in the dryer. How can I get it to stretch, fit? hmm.

Get a similar hat is youre going to be in the sun. Wear good sunglsses. Helps avoid cataract surgery.

Their hats are overpriced for Chinese made hats.

Petalique, I'm to give 3 choices of styles and colours when I put in my replacement order. They'll be filled on availability.

Your screenshot is the style I've chosen as well as another one which is the same style, just a different number. I don't know why they have so many style numbers.....they're all very very similar.

and the Olive colour is one of my choices, and the grey one, called Rockface on their website.
