Comments (10)Viburnum farreri 'Nanum' is said not to bloom well until quite old. Perhaps there is more than one clone, with variation in flowering behavior being shown. I have not grown it myself. The species name commemorates Reginald Farrer, who traveled far indeed to bring exciting plants to western gardens - and wrote about them in a distinctive style. I have not seen it here but some places aphids are a problem on V. carlesii. Its hybrid V. x juddii is claimed not to be prone to this....See Morevery fragrant shrub, what is it?
Comments (8)i find the korean lilac to be wanting in intensity .... or at least my generic is ... i can smell the mohawk from 30 feet away ... in a light breeze but for the flowers.. both are rather lackluster for the rest of the year .... thoguht the viburn is more single stemmed rather than the clumping lilac habit .... btw.. the mohawk is burkwoodi.. and i said it looked similar to mine.. others have suggested another type.. of which i know nothing ... better confirm which it is ... i also have a variegated vib .. which has a fragrance slightly reminiscent of lye soap.. whats that all about ... ken...See MoreIntensely fragrant 'wild' tree (?) can't find it!
Comments (12)I have a Halesia Carolina in my yard, and every year in late Spring I am drawn to the area where it's planted by an incredible scent. The flowers remain on the tree only for about a week and a half, so I can't be sure if it's the Halesia, or the wild honeysuckle. I can't find a reference on the net that says that the Halesia is a fragrant plant, but it's a real magnet for me in the spring. If you look around your area for the seed pods/drupes, and find them, we may have solved a mutual mystery. Please keep me informed. Thanks....See MoreI'm ready to prune those viburnums - when's the best time to do it?
Comments (4)since you are only taking one or two ... do it whenever.. imo ... the only usual qualification ... is on flowering shrubs .... is when you might be cutting off all next years flower buds.. if you are giving it a haircut .. and you did it late in the season ... but since you are leaving a majority of the plant.. unpruned... then this rule isnt really relevant .... you make your cut.. 3 to 6 inches from the ground.. where ever you can get the saw in there ..... without doing a lot of damage to stuff you are leaving ... the plant will rewspond by triggering 2 or 3 new shoots below the cut ... otherwise known as 'triggering dormant buds' a good tree saw.. really helps ... and if you have a sawzall ... a TREE BLADE is best .. it really matters.. when cutting thru wet wood.. as compared to dry lumber ..... either should be had for under 10 bucks ... lilac already has next years buds on them ... and i went to town on one of mine ... mostly because i walked by with the saw ... lol ... and the fact that it was hanging over the driveway and pissing me off ... it only took me 3 years ... but i taught it a good lesson.. on who is actually in charge around here .. lol.. AND I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO WORRIES ... so you shouldnt ... period ... ken https://www.walmart.com/ip/7-Inch-Folding-Utility-Saw-Triple-Edge-Razor-Tooth-Portable-Saw-with-Gear-Lock-by-bogo-Brands/915337201 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-9-in-4-5-TPI-Pruning-Sawzall-Reciprocating-Saw-Blade-48-00-1304/202256181?MERCH=REC--PIPHorizontal2_rr--202256182--202256181--N...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
