Please help, redoing Dining Room

last year

We are looking at redoing our dining room & 2 story foyer and was looking for any ideas or input. I am going to keep the wainscott & the coffered ceiling white. Added more trim to columns so will finish painting those white I was looking to paint the walls black (SW Iron Ore). I was going to swap out the candelier and sconces for brass pieces. Lookimg for ideas on wall decor, area rugs, etc Thank You

I need to see the other living spaces on this floor for sure. Your floor are very dark so black walls can be quite dramatic but they need to work in tandem with other living spaces IMO a DR is part of the public space so meeds to have connection to all those spaces.Are you keeping the furniture ? Provide more info and you will get more help. BTW you need anew front door if going drama in that space ..

I just added the trim to the front door so it will staying. I am going to paint the door and the trim all black and add brass hardware. I did plan on keeping the furniture if possible.

LOVE the traditional furniture ..hate the wallpaper..Love the tray ceiling..it needs a dramatic paint job to play it up..and really go for it..don't use white. Pictures make it a little difficult to tell the origin of the wood, if it is fruit wood or a darker oak..seems a bit too light for mahogany but seems to have a more golden tone as well ..that might be the photo. you are looking toward greens and golds?..the sage green would definately work well with your woods..are you going to keep the wainscoting? I might carry one of the other room colors that adjoin through to the ceiling tray of this room..a soft golden color would add LIGHT to it..and then put a contrast on the rest of the tray outside..you might play it up with some beautiful mouldings..and maybe a medallion if you are staying traditional.. then put beautiful mouldings on your wainscot to match..and under the wainscot you could use moulding frames..sometimes this is a little difficult to figure out how to do if you are carpentry challenged..but you can go to a store and find actual picture frames in a moulding that you love and buy a whole bunch of them and glue them equally spaced on the wall below the wainscot to make panels..or squares..and then have the background painted one color and the mouldling another..i prefer lighter as darker can be a bit "overkill".. say the soft sage behind a soft vanilla moulding with a very pale french cream or darker vanilla on the top 1/2 and then the golden ceiling with the vanilla moldlings and sage up in the tray with a vanilla medallion and an antique chandelier with the oiled bronze finish.. now if you want to get a little fancier..the sage on the wainscot behind the mouldings could be of a waterstained type silk or moire..that would be stunning..saving some of the same fabric for curtains..yum... Then wouldn't it be stunning to have depressionware green glassware with some very creamy and green dishes..they would bounce off that golden reddish wood..

What are you keeping? Will the furniture stay? If so, a few things I'd consider are: * Remove the chair rail and paint the room the same color (probably a light neutral); * Remove the valance which has a fussy, outdated look; consider Roman shades or plantation shutters instead; * Add a rug beneath the table (yes, it can be layered right on top of the carpet); * Consider a different light fixture; * Remove cabinet in the corner by the window, which will visually expand the space. It's a pretty room, but there are a few tweaks you can easily make which will give it a much fresher appeal.

Before going to the expense of buying a new table and chairs....consider looking for a more colorful rug, adding pillows to your couches, and shopping your home for colorful accessories. Art that is vibrant in color. Lamps with colored bases. A tray, perhaps in a shiny metal or weathered wood, that you can top with books, a vase or box, with some color and texture. Consider a printed fabric for your draperies. In other words....think of all the brown as your neutral background and build on it with color. A table runner for your dining room table, with a large bowl filled with lemons or oranges would bring life to the room. You might even consider recovering your chairs, or even having slipcovers made to cover the wood so that they look like Parsons chairs. I think that art and even two buffet lamps on your sideboard will enliven your space. Yes, these things will add up, but I also think your table and chairs are of good quality and are in a nice style for your room. You can do it!

It's the scale of the lamps that you need to concentrate on the most. I've found that most homeowners tend to purchase lamps that are too short/small. I use 28"-30" as my guide. I rarely use shorter than 28" unless maybe in a bedroom or for an occasional table, and over 30" starts to look odd in most homes. If you're looking at a lamp in person, rather than online (which has the measurements) just measure from the top of the shade down to the table. Also, purchasing inexpensive end tables and lamps first can really help change the look of a room, while you're saving up for the more expensive items (sofa, nice coffee table). Here's a before/after of a living room I did for a homeowner, where all I added were lamps, end tables and throw pillows (just reworked her other items). The end tables I used are really great, they work with a lot of furniture styles, plus they have a shelf and they're less than $100. I use them with a lot of clients! Since end tables don't get a lot of abuse, a "cheaper" one is a real budget saver. Great End Table As you can see in the Before, this furniture is large and overstuffed. A too small lamp would look silly. Using the above linked end tables and 30" lamps: You can use an end table like those (they're 24" high) and the proper size lamp, and it will work with just about any sofa you choose. Also, when choosing throw cushions I would get rid of the two red cushions on your sofa, and replace with a neutral. Maybe throw in a lumbar on one of your two chairs. And here's a room (while we were rearranging furniture) where the homeowner's furniture was not oversized/overstuffed. As you can see, these same end tables come up higher on her sofa, but still work. I can't remember how tall these lamps were, probably around 27"-28".

I think the black could look great in the dining room - I would first find a rug you love and then use that as a springboard for designing the rest of the room - it is much easier to find a paint that works with a rug than vice versa.

I would also be tempted to soften the look of the dining room chairs with slip covers or luxe cushions - something to liven/brighten up the pieces. Are there only 4 chairs? If so, I would be tempted to add a new chair for each end of the table to bring some impact and then you can have 6 chairs total (the current set up seems a little anemic for the room)

A larger and more modern chandelier would also breathe some freshness into the space -

The rest of the downstairs and two story foyer is painted in SW Agreeable Gray. Here are some of the sconces I was lookimg at. Me & my daughter were also going to diy one of the geometric wood pictures to go in the large wall.

Your table is turned the wrong way. Place it parallel to the wood floor.

Yes, turn the table but be aware that a rug should be 36-42" larger than the table top all around. It should not run into baseboards or furniture against the walls,

@BeverlyFLADeziner - she’s thinking of doing black walls. Can you find a rug for her?

@xclusive - I like your second rug choice the best but let’s see what some others come up with. I think black walls will work in that room, and I love the wallpaper from @apple-pie-order. The black with the bird ps is really dramatic and dining rooms are perfect for that kind of drama.
