Changing shower/tub plumbing fixtures
Comments (5)I think there is a good chance you will need to replace the valve inside the wall. If the tub/shower is tiled, can you get into the wall from the backside? i'm in the same boat, and finding we cannot replace our trim without changing the valve as well....See MoreHow difficult is it to change out a tub?
Comments (6)a buddy of mine replaced the tub in his bathroom. his wife went and bought the new tub, same length as they had but a little deeper. they used a sledge hammer to break up the old cast iron tub and get it out. then they realized that the new tub would not come in and turn to go in either. he said he should have realized it when the old one could not be turned to come out. they ended up remove the wall by the tub, bring it in from teh side, then putting the wall back up! the plumbing part is easy, it is the framing that can be the b@. if you don't have access to remove the old drain, use a dremel tool or similar rotary tool with a cutting wheel to cut the flange off the existing drain. remove the tub, install teh new drain and overflow, then set the new tub in place and lock the drain down. may take soem maneuvering to get it all lined up like this, so be prepared to remove the tub a couple times if necessary! access on teh plumbing wall makes it fairly easy, but if no access it can be a trick....See MoreConsidering changing from tub to shower on remodel-should I?
Comments (9)Who will be using that bathroom? My oldest took baths exclusively until he was six. My youngest is still taking only baths at five. So ideally, I'd have a tub in bathrooms used by kids. I know you said your kids are gone, but do you have visitors with kids or grandkids now or potentially soon? For resale, if I had kids and was looking to buy I'd prefer a house with a tub in the bathroom used by the kids, rather than storing their toys in my bathroom and having them troup into my bathroom. Same with a guest bathroom, it would be nicer to have the ability to bath my kids and I would definitely not want to impose on my host to use the master bathroom. On the other hand, if the bathroom will be used primarily by elderly visitors, a walk in shower would probably be better. This is very much guessing, but I'd think cost is probably a wash? The tub will be more expensive in materials but cheaper in labor. If you go with the inexpensive kohler cast iron tub available at Home Depot, you are probably ahead of a tiled shower floor in cost? The tub is definitely cheaper than a cast iron shower base....See MoreChanging out American Standard Roman tub faucet
Comments (3)You can’t change out a valve without access to the valve. That means an access panel. If the tub faucet is Pfister, it may be possible to change out the trim with a different Pfister trim. But not a Delta trim. This is often the nail in the horseshoe that brings down the whole country. One thing leads to another, and the next thing you know, you’re in the middle of a full gut remodel without having planned to be. So, start planning that full gut remodel now so that when something behind he wall or below the inaccessible tub starts to leak, you have a plan in place and aren’t trying to be reactive and that inefficient in your responses. Plan access panels for both tub and shower into your remodel....See MoreCentury 21 Classic Gold Realty
