Comments (16)valinsv- Another Aura fan here, I painted my kitchen cabs, pantry cabs and bookshelves in Aura and they look great and have held up well. There is a definite learning curve to Aura, it sets up very quickly (especially when you heat with wood and your house is warm and dry - yikes), so be prepared for that and don't rebrush, just paint and move on. The self leveling feature is just amazing, it really does self level, and it's ready for a recoat in an hour. I disagree with the above posters who say sanding is not necessary when using a "good" primer, I use "good" primers but *always* sand first and between coats, when painting furniture it's a necessity IMO. Full disclosure: we live in the boonies, have a kid and canines, aren't clean freaks and are hard on stuff, so I prime, sand, tack and paint at least 2 finish coats (over the primer) so everything holds up well. Invest in good brushes, go to the paint store (not a hardware store) and try the brushes to see what feels good in your hand. My fav is Corona (especially the Cortez, it's great for cabs and furniture), but Wooster and Purdy also make good brushes. Get a straight and an angled brush, clean them well, keep them in their holders and they will last a long time. Painting furniture and cabs is very rewarding, and you have a beautiful collection to work on. Good luck- sandyponder...See MoreMy Friend gets beat by her husband..how can i help?
Comments (17)SHE MUST GET OUT. Period. This person could kill her - I am not exaggerating. The sooner and faster the better. Physical abuse is a deal breaker. Having said that, I realize that she won't leave him on her own volition...right now. But here are some suggestions: 1) Do some research for her - find a women's shelter that puts women in protective care and keeps their whereabouts confidential...the kind that basically helps them "disappear," and offers counseling on a daily basis. Have it ready if/when she's ready to consider it. 2) Unless she is convinced that she must leave, she will almost certainly return, even if she were to leave for awhile. Find a counselor in your area who specializes in women's issues and abuse issues, and encourage (STRONGLY and CONTINUALLY encourage) her to visit. 3) Call the cops. Ask them what you can/should do as someone who knows what's going on. They can advise you on what - if anything - you may be able to do if the situation you described happens again. 4) Keep her trust and be her friend so that you can be her confidante. You may be the only person she's telling and she needs to be telling someone. Even if you "push" a bit to get her out of her home, always let her know how much you care about her, and that you're there for her. Get her talking about the abuse (ask her how she feels when it's happening, ask her if she thinks it's okay for a husband to beat his wife, etc.). Also talk to her about how she sees herself - chances are she has a very low view of herself and you can help "re-frame" her views by telling her how valuable you think she is. Sometimes an "a-ha" moment is possible for a person when they begin to hear themselves talk. And keep telling her - with as much urgency as you can - that she should never be treated this way by anyone and that she needs to get out ASAP. 5) Find out if she's talking to anyone else about this. If she has family that are reliable and who know what's going on, consider putting together an "intervention," wherein everyone sits her down for a "come to Jesus" talk about the danger she's in. It's good that you want to be her friend. She's lucky to have you....See MoreConvincing Husbands that Paint is OK on Cabinets
Comments (15)Donka, you had me howling. What is it with "poly" - I've used it, but don't paint with it. You reminded me about our great room when we moved in - it had espresso-almost-black panelling on the walls (and orange shag rug) - it was so dark with the black furniture of the previous owner that it was sort of difficult to tell what was at the other end of the room. We called it the Bat Cave. If it had been anything lighter I would have had real difficulty convincing my dh that we should paint it. That room also had NO windows on the Southern wall, just floor to ceiling built in espresso-almost-black built in cupboards. Our community is very expensive, and the house had a lot of room and a good sized property - it had been overpriced for the dated, though well kept, interior. There was potential, but I told dh we couldn't buy the house unless he promised that we could put in a couple of windows in the great room and paint the room. He agreed. Two weeks after we moved in, (with young kids we were just starting to feel settled) he started commenting on how nice it was to have so much storage, and did we really have to remove the cabinets? I whipped out the crow bar that afternoon. (Actually, I looked in many, many boxes in the garage to find it.) Look how strong Mommy is! I don't believe the mars/venus dichotomy either. But this does have me stumped. I would never paint quarter-sawn oak, and I have done my share of refinishing furniture, but there is a lot of ugly wood that with a coat of paint looks fresh and handsome. I love the splashes of color by artists such as Susan Sargent, and I LOVE the furniture by Maine Cottage....See MoreHelp me convince my husband this house is perfect out
Comments (24)Debra, if this is your first home and you have a typical first time home buyers budget there is going to be a lot of compromise. Most of us don't get everything we want in our first home, and sometimes we never own our "dream home". The important thing is that being able to buy your first home puts you in the game. Try to find a home that is in a decent neighborhood that has good bones and won't need a ton of updates to be comfortable. The kitchen may have wood cabinets and you may prefer white, but more important - are there enough cabinets to hold your dishes and are they in decent shape. You can live with wood, but you can't live with cabinets that are falling off the walls or have shelves that bow in the middle. Making sure the home has been maintained and the roof, HVAC, plumbing, foundation, windows and doors are in good shape is important. You can improve the colors and make things pretty, but as long as it functions well that can come in time. Find your home, move in, live there for a year, figure out how your budget is working with the added expense of home ownership. Keep a journal of the things that work and don't work for how you live. Plan a renovation budget and tackle the biggest pain points first. This is a marathon and you have many years to accomplish you goals....See Morelittlebug zone 5 Missouri
