Oriental Lily question

Hi,
I grew some oriental lilies for 3 or 4 years. They were pretty the first year and they turned smaller and uglier after first year. I dug them up and put compost underneath in fall for two years. They still look small and ugly. Is it something to do with the quality of the bulbs or something I did wrong? I bought bulbs at Costco. Thanks

Would you happen to have any before and after photos and maybe someone could advise you.

I would say that if they bloomed well for you the first year then it's not really the quality of the bulbs but perhaps their after care ..but pictures would help.

Hi Donna,

The white lily is from first year. The flower is normal size. I don't have pictures for the red one in the first year but I remember it's normal size. The red one is this year and it's the most decent look among all. It's has 4 inch only.

Over the winter and spring I successfully grew oriental lilies from seed in a two step germination process that I discovered on the internet. They are now two inches in height and are in clay pots. Hi, It's not abnormal since we had such a warm winter and everything is sprouting/blooming early. I hope you planted the bulbs 8 inches deep. The other bulbs will soon catch up and bloom-hopefully on schedule! If not you'll just have early blooms : ) Jen

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, well I am baffled then....lol...I dont think I have a drainage problem there. No clay at all, rich black soil that everything in that bed grows great in. Its so weird they come up looking great and fully bud up. Then when it starts to get hot out they start to get yellow stripes in their leaves and all the buds fall off before blooming. Followed by the entire plant burning out. It just makes no sense to me?? Could there be something else wrong in the soil?? Do Oriental Lilies ever get any kind of diseases that the soil could be locally contaminated by?? Maybe the first one I planted there was sick from the grower and gets to the new ones I plant there by the following year?

Catherine--If your lilies are not too dried out, I would plant them. They can be fussy about being out of the ground too long; but I would still try. Good luck--June

Hi,

Well actually, they don't look all that bad so I would just give them some fertilizer and hope for the best. I don't know if I'd dig them up again unless you knew they were in an area that stayed too wet for long periods of time.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Maybe someone else could chime in with some advice.
