2 Baby Hosta I have been watching for 2 years

last year

I have 2 little hosta that came up 2 years ago in the middle of larger hosta that I think must be seedlings. Are they big enough to move now?

Yes Yes Yes. I've got a garden full of babies that I didn't spray last year. None of them grew. They just can't fight disease AND grow. Usually my garden goes from baby sized to my height in 1.5 years. It's been that long already in the new garden - but no spraying - and most are the same size they were when planted. And these were almost all teas. I am trying to spray these babies some this year so that they can at least put some size on. THEN I'll let them make it or break it with no spray.

We had a huge hosta that sounds like yours. We divided it up and used it as an border plant. The ones at the front of the garden did well, but the ones we planted at the right edge got mowed down by rabbits every year. This continued for about four years so, last September we moved them so they weren't at the edge of the garden. They're coming up very nice this year. They're smalller than the ones that hadn't been chewed by the rabbits, but I'm sure that by the end of this season, I'll be able to move them so I can continue the border of my ever-growing garden.

Congratulations, MrGary.....you've done an outstanding job. I am saving your post to my clippings so I can go back to it easily for reference. I think the one you cannot remember might be Alex Summers. It sure looks like mine. I won't picture it here, but mine is about the same age as yours....I'm just a sophomore with hosta myself, so our plants are "of an age." I'm pleased to see you are growing Banyai's Dancing Girl. It looks almost like Blue Cadet, and it is a very inexpensive choice to mass plant. Van Wade suggests it as an edger if you ever need such a feature. I edge with liriope here in zone 9a. But I am making a collection of the smaller blue hosta such as BC and BDGirl since I don't like being redundant and I like variety. Things such as Drummer Boy, Dear Hearts, Happy Hearts, Cheatin Heart (golden), Golden Tiara, Grand Tiara, Twist of Lime, Lemon Lime, Feather Boa....well, I fibbed, I just like the smaller mounding hosta blue or gold or green! Thanks for treating us to a beautiful garden.

Do you have a streaked hosta? I understand that you can't get variegated hosta seedlings without a cross with a streaked hosta.

i dont understand why they remain that small after 2 years ...

which would lead me to dig them up and find out why ...

those do not look like seedling to me ... seedling do not pop out of the ground looking like 10 foot hosta... it usually takes 10 to 20 years to isolate and develop a salable hosta...

They are in the oldest hosta bed, 20 yrs old, that I only add impatiens to every spring so I know I didn't plant them and they look different from any of the hosta that are around them. They are hidden under the leaves of the medium to large hosta and there are small and minis in front of them. I have been just letting everything go to seed where they stand every year and have dug a lot of 'different' babies out of that bed and potted them up until they were bigger and ready for a new home. I get a lot of all green and a few with white in them. The greenies go in the woods and the prettier ones go in one of my other beds.
