Roses in the Missouri Botanical Gardens

There were two rose gardens, on formal and one informal. I wasn't able to spend much time in the formal one because it bored my daughter. Here is a video/slideshow of the informal rose garden.

I got to spend more time since the informal one had "cool" plant names such as pink turtle head and "stinky" flowers such as foxglove. (My daughter is 10 so those are the plants that captivated her.)

That is typical for giant dogwood and Yes... I obviously share your thoughts about royal pain in the butt empress tree. I don't understand the fascination people have with these as they are homely homely homely homely trees in all stages of their life. Dawn redwood on the other hand is such a lovely tree. Interesting to see that one there growing in the shade. Looks a little like it's getting shaded out.

Wow, that is a nice big clump of Basjoo. I'd like to get to mobot someday, I've heard good things about it. And I'd look up that Basjoo too. Gives me hope that maybe mine here, in a suburb East of KC will someday be some nice plants. I have a friend in the bootheel of Missouri, about 200 miles South of St Louis, that I'd like to try some plants like Basjoo, Monkey Puzzle, straight Southern Magnolia, cacti and more. Although he's a good friend, he's not what you'd call a plant lover, he's more of a tree cutter than a tree planter. I mentioned a Banana in the backyard by his inground pool and some cactus in the front and his response wasn't too favorable. I can see why he might not want cactus because he has small kids, but a Banana would be ideal, and rare there. Back by the pool, in the backyard, on the South side of his house would just be ideal. Maybe its just me, I don't know, maybe I have pool and zone envy! But the plants are only 8 dollars right now! I'll just kind of show up with the plants in tow, then he can't refuse! Will

I live only an hour away from St. Louis and am a member of the Missouri Botanical Gardens; in fact, I was once a volunteer worker there during college. I was surprised to find this post here in the Far North forum! (I am just a zone 6 lurker who comes here for the great photos.) I just wanted to tell you all that this was an amazing exhibit that has drawn huge crowds to the Garden this year. I have never seen so many people there at one time. I know it is a pretty long way away, but if any of you are ever in this area, you should plan to see MBG. My favorite place in the world!
