Shower help - kerdi board

Hi there,

I am re-doing my shower tile and instead of regular cement board, I convinced my husband to purchase Kerdi board.

Do you need to put a membrane over the kerdi board or only tape the seams?

There are many videos online of how to install Kerdi board and installation procedures are readily available on line where you will see that Kerdi board already has a waterproof membrane and you have to carefully tape all joints and holes.

@Jeff Meeks Yes, that's why I was a little confused. I read and saw different videos showing the contractors putting membrane on TOP of the kerdi. However, I was under the impression the kerdi was already waterproofed. Thanks for clarifying.

First of all, Kerdi is NOT a type of cement board. It is a waterproof "fabric" that you can use over plain old drywall. It is part of an entire system that includes a special drain. It can be used with the Kerdi tray, which is a sloped styrofoam floor, or over a traditional mud bed. The advantage of Kerdi is that the waterproofing layer is right under the tile and thinset. With a traditionally built shower a pre-sloped mud bed is formed, then a waterproofing layer is put on top of that, then another inch or so of mud is on top of that before you get to the tile. That's a lot of cement that can soak up water. Also, since you are in San Jose, you should check and see if your builder is talking about hot mopping your shower - that's a whole other ball of wax tar.

This is one of the reasons I prefer cement board over fiber-cement for many applications. Try wetting the board then doing just a skim coat of thinset on the hardie. Let it cure. Then the next day wet the cured thinset and hang your Kerdi. I just went through this same situation with another person, the skim coat of thinset seemed to help him quite a bit. Mongo

If you'd done the shower in 2014 or earlier you'd have been approved by schluter and the tile gods at TCNA using reg kerdi. Standards have changed , but that doesn't mean that all those with the old standard should rip em out or are going to experience premature failure. Sure , the lower perm rating is better- but it's not a free lunch. I wouldn't worry about it in a residential setting that doesn't get heavy use. And I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I have a steamer done with kerdi circa 2012 and it isn't coming out, and doesn't show any signs of failure. It's used approx 3-4 hours a week. Like CT said , it was done ( and good enough) like that for years prior to this. Using kerdiboard plus another membrane on top is a no no.

It's not a matter of trusting the Kerdi. The problem is on the back side of the drywall, which is not protected. I used to "trust" the Kerdi and drywall until I had a shower that the valve broke inside the wall cavity four years after being put in. Needless to say, the drywall turned to mush. That was not a fault of the Kerdi, or the installation. Not even the plumber's fault as it was just a bad valve. If cement board had been used, most likely the damage would have been much less that what I have to deal with now. You are wise to use a cement board. I would avoid Hardi, as Avanti is right that it is thirsty.

You dont tape the seams. You use NON modified thinset with Kerdi Band. at all board seams and corners inside/outside in the field you can use KERDI fix for the screw washers..

Any DIY tilers. Always stay ON the actual MFG (schluter) websites for facts.

Schluter is a bit anal about the "unmodified" thing. Overseas, they approve modified. Here, not so much. Truthfully, a morter like the lightly modified Versabond from Home Depot is just fine....

Also, with Kerdi Board, all one needs to do is use Kerdi Band on the verticals and the meeting of the Kerdi floor, walls and curb. The fasteners can be "flashed" with thinset or Kerdi Fix.....
