You dig a hole and plunk them in :-)) Seriously, if the soil is properly draining, that is really all you need to do other than water in well.

btw, it has long been established that amending planting holes is of no particular benefit and may actually impede establishment and healthy growth. Save any amendments to be used as a top dressing or mulch.

And it is never recommended to fertilize anything newly planted. Especially if you are planting in fall.

But with rises that ate potted, there's more you have to do. They need to sit in pots and put in partial shade for a week then move it to all day sun for a week right, then they could be planted right?

Answering some questions would help.

What rose, or general type of rose are you planning on planting?

Where are you planning on getting it from?

Where in New Jersey are you? (NJ goes from zone 5 to zone 7)

There exist combinations of answers to those questions where the real answer is you don't plant the rose in fall, but wait until next spring.

I had no idea that amending planting holes wasn't beneficial! I just planted several roses from Heirloom Rose's and they recommend adding peat moss, bone meal and earthworm castings to the hole and then watering in with fish fertilizer but I've also heard that you shouldn't fertilize new roses until they're more established. What is the reason that you shouldn't amend the soil? I have so much to learn!

I like with bare roots, I could plant them quickly. When I plant trhe caramella and florall fairy tales, can I plant the floral infront of the caramella(i believe they're slighy smaller)-those of you that have planted them would that work?

I have about 9 potted rose bushes now, having gotten a bunch of beauties at 1/2 price a couple weeks ago. I put them in my backyard against the fence, so they get morning sun. I keep them watered well. I intend to plant them alongside a picket fence I am going to put down the middle of a 6' wide grassy strip dividing my driveway from that of my neighbor. So, from what I gather here, can I plant them as soon as I finish the picket fence (within a couple weeks)? And to plant them, I should simply dig a hole in the nearly pure clay soil here, and dump them into the hole (minus plastic pot of course)? Do I need to add bone meal, RoseTone, or anything else to the hole? I intend to mulch them with shredded cedar, like the Scotts stuff. Anything I'm missing to give them the best chance? As far as I can recall, there is Love, Fragrant Cloud, Sol Desire, Double Delight, and a couple of other yellows, incuding Julia Child.

Where are you getting these from? We get them from Palatine, but couldn't get replacements this year because they had already sold out.

Blackspot is by far the worst problem growing roses in the East. Almost all roses will get it to some extent in this part of the world, including roses that are usually claimed to get resistant. Right now we have a sign up explaining that yes, the roses look like *$&%&&*. We know that. This is what roses look like at the end of July.

6b zone nj and I have never seen these roses personally so all I have to go on is what websites say and if users hear have planted them. I would like bareroot own root because if they're grafted there's a chance they might look like what underneathe or grow totally differently . I have read these 2 roses are simular in shape and I would love to plant them both nut don't know how to make them work I think they're kinda nig to plant next to each other so I thought maybe plant floral infront of caramelka and trim it down to 3 or 4 depending on size of caranella I think I will order September ber or next april.

It's rare for own-root roses to be sold as bare roots. Most of the time, when you buy an own-root rose, it is sent to you in a band, a 4" pot, or a gallon pot with soil. Just clarifying your terminology.

This is not a big problem. It may never happen. It helps if you don’t poke about in the soil around the rose stem. If it does occur you can easily fix it if you carry out normal observation and routine care. Suckers are easy to spot and remove.

So if I ordered a grafted rose and if it did look different from what I ordered, it could be fixed? Like a head is one thing to take off, however what if it's a different color or looks like a completely different rose could that occur?

If you order a grafted rose and it doesnt lool like what it is suppossed to be then you have the wrong rose and it cant be changed. A grafted rose should still be true to its color and form.

Some roses are stronger on a graft. I have both and have never had a grafted rose turn a different color .

I don't understand this statement at all. Why would any rose - own root or grafted - have to sit outside for so long before planting?

Bare root which is hard to find in own root needs to sit in water a few hours to a day I believe but the pots-they need to sit in partial shade a week thrn sun a week or sitting in direct sunlight at varying hours

If you are worried about forgetting it, put a reminder on your phone. Or a note on your fridge. "bare root rose done soaking on (this day)"

If you have health problems that make planting on a particular day difficult, I think it would be better to get a potted rose. I have health problems and have to think "which option gives me more flexibility?" I would worry less about a potted rose because I could take care of it in the pot for extra days until I was strong enough to dig the hole.

I'm not sure where that information came from but it's not correct. At this time of year - or even earlier in the season - unless the roses are greenhouse grown and receive NO direct sunlight (highly unlikely) - they do not require any gradual acclimation to outdoor planting. Receive the rose, dig a hole, plant, water in well. End of story.

As a landscape professional, I have no issues with planting through summer. I do it all the time and with a very high success rate. But then I rarely ever buy via mail order and can purchase the plants I need pretty much year round. In many cases, better mail order sources do not ship their plants until a suitable time for planting for the shipping destination. In hot summer climates, early fall would be a more likely expected ship date than midsummer!

HU many numbers, I think you’re getting a bit confused about bareroots, grafts, hardening off and suckering.

• Bare root roses are sold when the plants are dormant. They are leafless. Thus they do not need any hardening off, so there is no need to keep them shaded when you receive them. Just soak and plant.

• Potted plants are in full leaf but, unless they were grown under shading, they do not need hardening off.

• Grafted plants do not suddenly revert to the rootstock and certainly wouldn't be sold in a reverted condition. You would receive the rose you ordered and it would continue to be that rose unless something, such as damage to the roots or long term neglect, causes it to throw out suckers from the rootstock. There is no reason to avoid grafted plants. You are worrying unnecessarily.

Interesting-i have that sometimes when roses are grafted they will tend to be climbers or grow larger than than what's expected(sometimes).

If the roses are being produced under typical growing conditions - and that would be out of doors with full exposure to the elements - no, it is NOT necessary.

Growing taller or biggerr isnt the same thing as becoming a wholly different variety. Some roses experience some die-back in colder zones so will never attain the height of a rose in a warmer clime. Some things you will just have to see. My best suggestion is to visit a local or regional garden that grow your desired varieties now to see how theyre doing and how big theyve become this season.

That is a good suggestion,however my area doesn't carry varieties I am looking for(florals fairy tale, Eureka or over the moon).

@floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK A few times I got a bare root in the spring. Once it grew and flowered, it obviously wasn't what I ordered and I was sent a replacement in the summer. I can't remember exactly where this happened, but I used to regularly get bare roots from Pickering and S&W greenhouse. Probably one of them, but I'm not certain. I would typically just keep the wrong rose and plant the replacement, so I would get a free rose. I would water well and pile mulch on top and within a couple of weeks top growth would immerge and all would be good.

Yes, kidhirn2, one could possibly receive a rose you weren’t expecting. But, unless the seller was a complete crook, it would not be different from what was ordered because the rootstock had taken over, which is what HU numbers appears to fear. It would be different because it was mislabelled.

Yeah I use helpmefind, however when going by pictures, some look like pastels and other ones look deep pinks and oranges-I want to compare to floralfairytale.

@floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK Not sure how things are in the UK, but mislabeled bare roots aren't that uncommon in the US. I don't think the sellers were crooks. What would they have to gain by sending a different rose? And they weren't rootstock roses.

Perhaps I didn’t make myself clear. Or perhaps you misread my comment. I meant that while a bare root might not produce the rose you were expecting, that would be because it was a different cultivar and had been mislabelled. It would not be because the rootstock was flowering. OP seems to fear receiving a reverted rootstock which would be highly unlikely.

To HU with numbers (the OP), as I mentioned to you on your similar thread on the NGA forum in mid-July, it's really important to look at a LOT of pictures on HelpMeFind to see what a rose actually looks like. People post pics there from different climates and show their roses in differing conditions. Look at a lot of pictures there of a particular rose, and also note where the poster is from, if it says.

I've been reading those and unfortunately a majority of the ones I was lookibg at only say where they're from and weather conditions I feel like I'm overloaded on pictures I like the pastels and was thinking of Peachy it is hard finding a shrub rose that's peachy,yellows,and pinks that doesn't turn into reds or oranges. I think floralfairy is a good bet for me I am slighy concerned a iyt the habit and numbers of blooming roses, however it could be trimmed. I have checked out so many that are simar-la park,peace,over the moon,glowing peace,by appointment,cornelia,life of the party,eureka,daybreaker and even more. They're beautiful, but I don't want oranges or dark roses once they've aged plus I like that fft will bloom in different shade or color but stay light.

I am an highly recommend Daybreaker. It is alwsys in bloom with a yellow, pink and yellow combination
