Exterior home update advice
Comments (9)Your home is stunning and perfectly fits in South Carolina. There's a reason there's red brick homes everywhere- it's the style in that location. Painted brick requires regular maintenance. It's not a one and done deal. I definitely wouldn't do grey painted with a grey roof either unless you want one grey blob. I say stick with the classic red brick that will never go out of style. A cape cod in SC would just look out of place....See MoreNeed advice updating PINK exterior paint over yellow brick townhome!!
Comments (13)Here is another one with a dark gray (soft black) like you suggested originally. Two views shown below. ^ The trim is F&B "Railings" color. F&B refer to it as a soft black http://us.farrow-ball.com/railings/paint-colours/farrow-ball/fcp-product/100031...See MoreIn Need of Design/Paint Advice: Exterior House Update-Roof & Paint
Comments (3)I'm not a fan of painting brick as it turns a no maintenance product into a long term maintenance issue. The brick seems to have more browns than grays in it but the roof is gray. You need to find a color that marries the two. Something in the taupe family would work. Also, a couple of other things. If you plan on keeping shutters I would switch to a wider shutter that is correctly sized for you windows. The current ones are too narrow. Also, the area without a railing in front of the door needs to have one installed. Building codes require them if the change in elevation is more than 30", which yours definitely is. Comments (26)"Ideally, a primary or entry walkway should be at least 48" wide and even wider is [often] better." I concur 100%. Another consideration in addition to sheer usability, is that a walk's width needs to coordinate with the building architecture ... size being one of those characteristics. This walk does that in that it is equal to the full width of the opening at the porch. My guess is that the walk is 5' 4". I have no arbitrary opposition to straight walks, thinking that many of them are equal to curved walks in their potential to be beautiful. From what we are shown in the picture, either seems like it could work well. It would probably only be worth the expense of changing it if a person developed a compulsion about it, as compulsions cannot be explained by reason alone....See MoreJean Hoppe
