prestige range hood blower - how to clean?
Comments (32)Pielady You probably can remove the fans to clean them if you want to. I am speaking from limited experience, but I can do it on my hood and I am assuming other squirrel cage blowers aren't too different. It won't be particularly easy and you will need some tools but they will come off. If you look into the blower from the side you should see the motor shaft protruding through the back of the fan itself. The fan will be connected to the motor shaft some way, either by a hex nut, or a collar with a allen screw into it (like my hood.) Or the back of the blower could be mounted to the motor shaft by a screw in which case you won't see the shaft, just the screw head. Grab the fan with your hand (hand protection would be a good idea-old gloves or a towel)to keep it from rotating and use the appropriate tool to remove the screw or nut. After removing the screw or nut, the fan should just slide out. As I said not easy, and you may have to bend in a few odd directions but do-able if this really bothers you. I haven't done mine yet. After a couple of years the fan seems to have a very light brown tint and don't seem to need it yet. While you have the fans out, it would probably be a good idea to wipe out the inside of the housing where the fans live. I would also say from the sound of it (your Q-tip test) you don't have enough build-up to slow the fans. You may want to check if you back draft damper is opening all the way (that's part of the vent cap on the wall or roof.)...See MoreUrgent! Wolf pro wall hood advice for 36' Wolf 6 burner AG range!
Comments (9)First, a warning -- I have never lived in a house that needed make-up air. Not even close. Double-pane glass makes little sense for us since all the heat goes around the sashes in our Victorian. My experience with MUA is related to commercial systems. What follows is an opinion about the kinds of things that would make me consider MUA. Unless you have a Code requirement for make-up air, you have a fireplace you use when cooking (I seem to remember that you are South Bay?), have a "naturally" vented gas appliance in "connected space" (no always-closed doors between the hood and the appliance), or have a "tight" house (recent, energy-efficient construction, most likely), I would skip MUA. Even if you do need MUA, the difference in the maximum hood flow probably wouldn't significantly influence the the cost of the MUA system, which I would think was primarily labor driven. If not significantly more expensive, and you can run at least an 8" duct (preferably a 10"), I'd go with 900 CFM for two reasons: * You have it when you need it -- guests over, and the kitchen fills with smoke... * A 900 CFM blower at 600 CFM may be noticeably quieter than a 600 CFM blower at 600 CFM The 24" will serve you well. Comments (2)I have the 1600 cfm prestige externally mounted (about 5' and 2 turns to outside wall) 46" blower and fan inside a 54" wood hood. I have a bluestar with 2 22K BTUs plus 4 other burners and grill. The fan is great. I can't believe how quiet it is! It produces less noise than my old recirculating fan (which was quite loud). Everything goes up the hood. Very easy to clean too. Our hood is 27" deep for even a bigger capture area. No one has hit their head. Depending where you live you may need heated make up air which can cost thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. I live in an 1825 house so it's not air tight and we don't have that requirement. Check to see what the mounting instructions (in the range specs) if you have a wood hood. I believe ours was 36" from the top of the grate to the lowest point on the hood. My inspector measured that and in the past had people moved their hood....See MoreX Post: Prestige Range Hood Opinions
Comments (2)We don't have the Prestige chimney style hood but have a prestige 1600 CFM fan and blower inside our 54" x 27" wood hood. It's been extensively used for the past 3 years. We love it. It's quieter than our old recirculating fan! It does a great job. Easy to clean up. We recently had a problem with the wall mounted light switch. Just received the replacement part. I would highly recommend a prestige fan....See MoreGeorganne Dermigny
