Amorphophallus stem rotted, can it be saved?

Medium sized Amorphophallus konjac stem rotted and the stalk is falling over. I've had a couple do this. Could it regrow this year if I left it? Should I pull the "bulb" tuber out of the ground now and let it dry, store it, and see if it grows again next year? Seems like it might rot if left in ground.

I live in a borderline hardy area. Small bulb tubers do survive and sprout in the ground after Winter, I get surprised. Just had two Konjac pop out of the ground in the last week. Larger bulb tubers tend to rot. I lift out and store a larger tuber.

I think once the stem goes, it won't regrow until next year (provided the bulb is healthy). If you have concerns about the bulb, I would dig it up and store it until next year. I had some in a cardboard box from November until May(?) and had the biggest bulb bloom in the box without nary a drop of water. Amazing things. What zone do you live in? My mother in TN can't get rid of them no matter how many times they've been dug up and given away or tossed in the trash.

I had to move it outside when it started to stink up our garage that year.

Well the "bulb" seemed okay after the top died, it all turned into baby food like mush after two weeks. Maybe I should have brought it inside and put in the basement cooler and dry. Or the rot was eventual, I don't know.

I would remove most of the roots just below the junction of the two stems. That way you get a better look at possible remaining rot in the stems. A particular area if concern is the hemicircle of dark tissue in the lower, right side stem. If there is dark colored tissue in the cross-section, you may need to cut higher and even possibly separate the two limbs. Then let the cuts callous in air for about a week. Pot in dry soil, and wait for signs of new growth before watering. This will take some time, maybe a couple of months or more. The old rule of thumb is about 1 month per inch in diameter. Patience is required. Heavy watering too soon will rot the plant again. Happy Growing! Brad

Rachel, it's very hard for me to make an assessment when I am not physically there to examine your plant. I don't quite understand what you mean by soft but not overly. I see that your last picture you had lost a couple of stems, so perhaps if its really rot setting in the base, you need to catch where is the rot happening at. If it's right under all the stems towards the roots, you are better of cutting off as much rot/brown portion as possible until you see healthy green stems, and try to root the cutting as best as you can. At this point, you can try to snap 1 or 2 healthy cuttings at the tip end towards the base. Always let the cuttings dry up and callous before their to root them in new soil. And also make sure when you snap them apart, the stem must be close as to the root base as possible, if you can snap some roots with the stem even better.

Karen- The "rocks" on top are just perlite-the plants are in a 50/50 mix of AV soil and perlite. I have been researching Violet care. My other violets seem to be doing better so far. They already look much better than they did a couple months ago. -- Vikki- They used to be in a much darker area before I moved them after receiving advice from a previous topic I posted. They look much better now than they did back then. Also when I mentioned the "once to twice per week" it wasn't intended to be an official schedule; just a general estimate of when I water based on the moisture of the soil. The mix I'm using is pretty airy and dries easily. -- Regarding the sucker-I've placed it over a jar of water with a sheet of foil on top. About 1mm of the stem is touching the water. I'll update if anything happens. Thanks again! EDIT: added pictures. I also cut two leaves and put them in a similar setup to see if they can root.

Maybe some baby tubers are in the ground and will appear next year. My mother has been fighting them for years. My son-in-law and grandson swore they dug to China to get all of the bulbs out a few years ago and yet more and more come up in the same spot. I say why fight it (other than the smelly blooms so close to the house if it blooms that year) and enjoy them.
