Sunflower seeds and food dehydrator

I finally found Fritolay sunflower seeds in Wal-mart yesterday. They were in the snack display by the checkouts. Where they weren't a week ago or a month ago. Last week I bought some David and Sons, which were really good when I was a teenager but have declined since then, but I was desperate so I bought a bag. After finding the Fritolay ones yesterday I gave the David and Sons to my daughter who was here picking up her dogs.

I'm thinking of growing some for myself next year. I used to do that sometimes. I'm only growing small sunflowers this year for the flowers.

Do you like sunflower seeds? Do you have a favorite brand?

I just got a food dehydrator. I'm dehydrating bananas right now, which is why I was in Wal-Mart again yesterday. I got them and some beef and stuff to make some jerky with. It's taking forever to dry out the slices. I used the lowest temperature because my house is at 85 degrees right now and yesterday. My heat pump filter needs changing and am waiting for my daughter to come back to replace it. (she is coming back for a going away party for a friend, not just to change my filter lol, just to be clear). I went out this morning to buy one. I didn't think the dehydrator would heat the house up so much but I think it's contributing. Anyway, apparently was supposed to be 20 degrees hotter than I had it set at. They are close to being done.

The beef is marinating in the fridge so hopefully the filter will fix my heat pump issues and I can start the jerky today. Do you have a food dehydrator and what do you use it for? I'm planning on dehyrdrating celery from the garden soon. I've also got some herbs that if they do well I can dry some of them. So, far my cilantro is only creeping along in the heat. The dill is taking off. I prefer fresh but in the Winter it will be nice to have something from the garden.

I use mine for venison jerky and tomatoes. I tried strawberries once and it took forever.

I own one of the Ronco dehydrators. We originally bought it for drying a few things for backpacking trips. It does OK for small trips for two people, but it has been seriously underpowered keeping up with the garden production of what we had wanted to dry in order to preserve food. That happened last year with tomatoes, and this year with figs. We went around the problem learning how to can (last year) and learning to make fig/fruit wine (this year). You can figure that the freezer space was shrinking rapidly with full summer garden production, so freezing was not an option. Nothing against canning, and certainly nothing against wine, but I would have preferred to have a larger capacity dryer. I love drying tomatoes and then grinding them up into a tomato powder that can reconstitute into a sauce out in the woods in a backpacking trip. It is also great to have at home, easier than canning and you can actually store them without refrigeration. I love their taste too! For figs, I use dried figs in breads, muffins, energy bars I make myself (mixed with nuts and other things). Lately I have also found out that zucchini slices dry very nicely, and so do green beans. I also have peach and nectarine trees, they ripen with the figs, so yes, more space in a dehydrator! We are considering making one of the solar ones, but out of nice materials that we already have (not cardboard). The main model plan that is going around the internet has a tilted black air duct, it should work just by the principle that hot air rises. Also, it is very sunny and very dry where I live, so solar should be good for us, save energy and avoid heating the room in the summer. The food is confined so critters should not be a big problem. Has anyone had any experience with the solar types? any advice?

-Green beans, for dehydrating, are best when picked while they are still immature - before they have developed the beans inside the pods. Be sure to blanch them the suggested time and chill in cold water. I'll have to try the 30-minute freezer method before drying. WHO KNEW??? -Try making tomato leather and using it as a base for tomato sauce/paste. You can also make mixed vegetable leather (has a large percentage of tomatoes in the mixture). You can also dry tomato slices until they are crispy. Store whole, and then make it into powder as needed. -A lot of people forget the produce they have in the crisper drawer in the refrigerator, and it ends up getting tossed into the garbage due to neglect. Much of it could be dehydrated to use later. Never waste any kind of greens (including lettuce and cabbage), peppers, mushrooms, celery and celery leaves, cucumbers, etc., they can all be dehydrated. Dehydrate citrus rind, bread crumbs and croutons, cookies, bars, crackers, breads, cereal/granola, rosehips, lemon balm, lemongrass, and an assortment of herbs. Too many bean sprouts? My fall garden is going nicely in the little hoop houses, several different lettuces, green onions, snow peas, mache, turnips, golden beets and some purple bok choi. Of course, everyone knows my pantry. I'm not a prepper, but I am a farm girl and I do what farm girls have always done: fill the pantry. Elery says during canning season the Grandkids don't dare stand still or they might end up in a jar. We have a farm and gardens, fruit trees and berry canes, an asparagus patch. Elery hunts for deer during season and we raise meat chickens and grassfed beef. We have chickens for eggs. I have a bucket of sauerkraut "working" right now, and just finished canning the last of the tomatoes, only greens are left to go. We do have a generator and a pellet stove. If we lose power the generator can run the big geothermal system but nothing else. Or, it can run the water, the lights, and the pellet stove. There are two tons of pellets in the garage and Elery says we'll get another ton, Mother loves to sit in the corner of the dining room next to the pellet stove even when we don't have a power outage, it's gets about 90F in there, LOL. I have a grain grinder and can grind my own flour, and I have wheat and corn ready for grinding. The dog eats what we eat, or rather I make her food, we don't feed her commercial dog food. She's 12 now, so it hasn't seemed to shorten her life appreciably and she walked 2 miles with Elery and I yesterday, still hunting. Of course she slept all afternoon after that. I save most of my own seeds, so don't buy most of them. I have 250 cloves of garlic ready to go in the ground in another month or so. I think I'm pretty much prepared, but that's no different than any other year, I just keep doing what I've always done. I haven't figured out yet how to grow coffee or toilet paper! Annie

Makes sure to dehydrate your beef jerky at a minimum of 155F and store it in the fridge. Also, try to remove any fat before dehydrating as it can cause the jerky to get rancid.

I'm sure I am missing a few things I can't recall. I've had three of the Nesco model over the years but eventually the fan motor goes out. I have 12 racks now so can do quite a lot at once.

LoneJack, I bought round steak that has almost no fat. One pack of super thin, the other semi thin, which has a little fat that I cut off.
