I think you may have slugs. You can find out for sure if you take a flashlight out after dark and look at your plants. You can use Safers Slug and Snail bait. It is made with Iron Phosphate and is approved for Organic farmers. It won't harm birds or pets. Some have had success with beer, but it never worked for me. Going Organic doesn't mean you have to let the bugs eat your plants even if they are your vegetables. There are things and recipes you can use. All you have to do is find out what's causing the damage and look up what to do about it.

toxic in the SHORT run, love- that's stuff that they make even the illegal immigrants use masks and gloves around. they DO make effective plant-based bug sprays, now a days- you should look in to them. but I agree that you likely have slugs weakening the plant enough for the bugs to take up residence, and the slugs are the more dangerous pest (since they are currently climbing up my hibiscus, and swimming in my cat's outside water dish!)

I just did a quick search - broom caterpillar -. There were a few hits, one recently in the Butterfly Garden forum had a nice picture of the bug. Other hits had some more advice on how to treat pest caterpillars. This site is great. I would search here, google if need more info to form a plan of action. Or not, I mostly just watch. Except for snails and slugs. They must die. Off topic but I moved an oak leaved hydrangea that was plagued with snail damage, now it has none. The slugs in that area don't know how yummy hydrangea leaves are? The shade in the new spot is better for the plant? Hope it survives its new nemesis, dogs chasing squirrels. Oh, I searched for leaf cutter bees, one article did say they can be a problem if they remove a lot of leaf area. Spraying doesn't work against them as they don't eat the leaves but use it for nesting material, must cover the affected plant. One poster wrote a bee kept putting leaves into her husband's gardening shirt pocket. Think I will have to sit out with my binoculars next spring to try to see one in action. A really good trick I read somewhere (maybe even here) is to plant large cans around each plant. Big apple juice cans worked for me. Plant, then shove the can down about half way arond the plant. I also use tons of eggshells all around too. It also helped when we were still getting frost warnings, none of my plants bit the dust. So far, mine are doing great, keeps the slugs away. If they're still getting eaten up, you could try sticky tape arond the cans to catch the invaders. I guess you would have to change the tape every once in a while (gross!!!), but it works on the crawly guys. Now for the flying ones.....
