In the House - Squirrels!

Over the winter I had an unexpected guesst... a Squirrel. Turned out it wasn't just 1.

I picked up one of the safe capture traps, read the directions for setup, baited, and ....found I couldn't use it! At least where I wanted to use it. The trap I have has a metal gate that drops (due to gravity) when the critter moves the trip/bait plate.

I managed to catch not 1, but 5... yes.. 5.. squirrels this spring in a different location than to where I heard them. I only knew of them being there because i discovered one in that bathroom.

I've been squirrel free since the spring, having removed the ones that I cause and relocated very far away. It was obvious where they were getting in, those lcoations have been repaired and are still sealed, but there must be a new access that I have not found yet.

I have not heard or seen the new "guest" where I caught the others.

My question is.... I know where they are..in the basement ceiling, but my trap can't fit there. Instead of waiting to see if they find where the trap is in the bathroom, I'd like to trap them where I know they are. The space is very tight between a drop-panel ceiling and the floor of the upstairs. Which is why the exiting trap doesn't function in that space. Looking for suggestions. Will be looking for and addressing who they are getting in today. Thanks for reading.

LOL...Doris you always make me smile! :) It will be interesting to see where you will have Gingko I am sure,I find Maples,Oaks and Walnuts popping up in strange places,funny thing about the Walnut,I have no clue where this tree is..lol.. My elementary school had Gingko tress lining the front lawn,I remember no one spent much time there when the fruit dropped...lol.. I watched the Chickadees go at my Mammoth Sunflowers all day long,watched them take the seeds to the pine trees and hide them and watched them pull the Mammoth seeds out of Coneflower heads where they decided at one point to be a good hiding place! But what really had me laughing my butt off, was when I opened a Marigold seed head to check the seed, and there was a Mammoth seed right in the center, all nestled in for safe keeping! I was transplanting something out of a cup and found Mammoth seeds stuffed in the drainage holes.....lol.. Looks like I wont be short on sunflowers next year!...lol.. The critters really do keep things interesting,there are some real characters in nature! :)

Lou, I am glad to know that you are fine and busy, I miss your postings, knowledge and sense of humor. And you must be enjoying your harvests, berries are good for us! I don't have squirrels either, my 4 dogs keep them in check.:) Papa Jim and Rita, I am enjoying my blueberries today and I have been eating them since May. For me, to have the amount of blueberries that I use, I would have to plant a lot more than what I have now. I picked large buckets in May from the farm that had the early kind and yesterday I picked from the other farm that had the late varieties. I make jams, muffins, pies, eat them fresh, freeze them, very versatile. After sampling so many varieties, I can tell you that every variety tastes different, before picking I taste and if I like them, they get picked, yesterday I only found one variety a little sour that was not very good. The two farms that I went got no problems with birds, squirrels and didn't even see bugs when I was picking. Silvia

Squirrels over-winter here... often in structures (particularly attics) where they can cause damage. They ripped off some of my gutter screens, heaven knows why... I caught one of them in the act. They also seem to be compulsively drawn to dig in DW's flower pots on an almost daily basis, a source of constant frustration for her. I've had them uproot bean transplants from pots (I surround them with chicken wire now) but never before in the garden. They were really bad this year, uprooting an entire row of runner bean seedlings just as they began to emerge. This was a banner year for acorns, all of the trees were loaded; so unless we have an exceptionally hard winter, there should be a large population again next year. :-(

First, not only did I laugh hysterically after reading Gizmo's in-thread caption and then scrolling down to the squirrel sconce photo; I thought it was so hysterical, I showed it to DH - who also laughed. I enjoy considering the designs that Gizmo posts, and I enjoy the wide-ranging perspectives/reactions from posters. @Judy Graham, hope you are doing okay. I recently read another harsh comment you posted suggesting a post was an ad, when it was not. I almost posted that the comment seemed out of character. I think of you as someone willing to offer resources and "doable" ideas on Houzz, not as a thread policer.
