Do I need more than one chimney liner???

We're going to get a pellet stove insert and got a quote from a company that specializes in them - Hearth Works Fireplace Center. Their quote included a liner. We already knew that our chimney needed repairs and called someone for an inspection and quote. The chimney guy's quote included a chimney liner (as well as a cap and repairing/replacing bricks). When my husband told him that we don't need a liner because we're getting one with the pellet stove insert, the chimney guy said that it's completely different and that when we had our new furnace installed last year, that the company that installed it should have installed a liner and didn't. Does this sound right? We need a liner for our gas furnace as well as a liner for the pellet stove insert? Can 2 liners even fit in a chimney?
