Identifying this plant - thought it was an herb

I planted a bunch of herbs and I am unable to identify this one. I tried using the picture finder and it says it could be nightshade, but that isn't something that I planted. Of the herbs I planted that I am not that familiar with are lemon balm, marjoram and savory but this doesn't look like those. Any idea what it is? I tasted it and that didn't really help.

It's definitely something in the nightshade family. Many of these are common weedy species and can appear just like any other type of weed. Feel free to remove :-)

Okay. Thanks. I read they can be poisonous....I ate half a leaf but I think I'll survive :)

Hard to see the details of the plant. A closer picture of the foliage may assist in the ID. But that said, from what I could see I would lean toward the mexican tarragon (T. lucida) as well. Mexican tarragon is a pretty plant. I'm growing it (from seed) for the first time this year. It has recently started blooming. If you do have this plant, be sure to save some seed to start more next season. FataMorgana

There's two separate things wrong. The first thing is that you've got leafminers. That's what's causing the translucent tunnels in the leaves themselves. Pick off and dispose of affected leaves. If you look very closely inside the tunnels you should find a little larva if it's still there. The second is the black stuff that look like either fungus or mold. By the way it's patterning it appears to be capitalizing on the damage done by the leafminers, at least initially. Get rid of the miners and you'll most likely get rid of the mold/fungus. Rodney

It depends on the nightshade :-) It's a big family and some are commonly grown as vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplants) but even those can have some toxic components. It is best never to eat or taste anything growing unless you have a confirmed ID.

One of the various manifestations of Solanum nigrum, Black Nightshade, a common, and toxic, weed of cultivation. I would reiterate, please do NOT eat stuff you cannot identify. Your herbs would all have distinctive strong scents. No need to taste them until you are certain.
