biochem reminded me of the custom option. I once did that too at a local small country furniture & decor store for a small desk accent lamp. They had various sizes, shapes, fabrics and trims to pick from. I think I paid over $50 for a small 6" shade, but it fit my needs perfectly. Target, JCP and Lowes will all have suitable basic shades, but I can't picture anything really special. I have also bought basic shades at Christmas Tree Shop of all places!! I once was looking for a particular size that was hard-to-find and was suprised to see so many decent (looking) shades for so cheap! They really have some great deals.

I'm with Annie. It is very difficult to buy lampshades unless you have the lamp in hand, including the harp and a bulb, and can stand it up on a table, plugged in, and try things. Good lamp and lighting stores are set up for this. There are so many subtle differences among shades that you really can't tell which ones will be best until you see the whole business set up and lit. I was in the business for many years, and I can't do it with any guarantee. There are materials, quality of construction, overall height and width, angle from top to bottom, placement of the frame and attachment ring, surface texture, balance and appropriateness with the lamp base, and effect of color and fabric on the light it gives - and all those things have to be considered. I know I am a broken record on this subject, but in my view, the three most effective ways to spoil a good room scheme are: cheap picture framing, low-quality paint, and cheap or badly matched lampshades. In the overall budget for your home, none of those details is very expensive when you consider their effect.

Good ideas, all. From the photos posted by chijim and by sasafras, it appears that the lower diameter of the shade is greater than the diameter of the lamp base. Is that accurate? Would a drum shade be at odds with the formality of these lamps? AD, I may have to make the trek to a shade store. That is probably the best place to find something that will work. My choices for shade stores are an hour and a half one direction or two and a half hours the other direction. I live in a tiny town some distance from larger cities. I love living here, but it does have its inconveniences.

I ended up with this shade. I took the advice of bringing it to the lighting center. I will stew on it for a bit & see how we like it. this room is a big work in progress. Thanks for the input!
