what should I do to prep my Lawn - guidance needed

I'm looking to improve my lawn care knowledge. Now that the freeze is over, is there any sort of winter or pre-spring treatment I should be doing to my grass?

If nothing new, what should the next couple of steps be? Please feel free to link or suggest your favourite products.

I'm up around Frisco and I have some pretty "Stringy" Bermuda. Usually, the clover leaves go nuts around the edges of my house several times of the year as well.

Okay, Frisco just outside of Dallas. Thanks for your location.

It's summer, so I'm not sure where the freeze and spring stuff is all about. But here are the basics of bermuda grass in order of importance.

Watering: Deep and infrequent is the mantra for watering. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Infrequent, this time of year, means once per week for a mature installation.

Mowing: For the best look, mulch mow bermuda at your mower's lowest setting 2-3 times per week. You can mow once a week, but that's not going to give the best look.

Fertilizer: Bermuda is an odd one in that it can take all the nitrogen based fertilizer you can give it. If you want to use organics, use something like soybean meal or corn gluten meal. Next best would be alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow). Use these at 15 to 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet on a monthly basis for bermuda.

Weed control: Wait until September to spray something like Weed-b-Gon to kill the clover. If you want to keep the clover, that's fine - don't spray it.

Hold on!! There's more than one Frisco in the world and I have to wonder why anyone living in Texas would worry about after-winter/early spring lawn care in July!

Am I missing something?

I have both the Morden Belle and the Morden Centennial. http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a184/valleyrimgirl/roses/ I am still adding pictures into the rose album, but there are a few in there to compare with. Here is a separate picture of Morden Belle (purchased in '05). She is a small rose that I find only grows about 2 feet tall here and when in bloom quite often the branches arch and go onto the ground. I have not noticed the flowers fading like the Centennial does. The flowers are just the tiniest bit smaller than the Centennial. Very pretty. I like her. The Morden Centennial (purchased in '99) on the other hand is quite tall...4 - 4 1/2' tall. Clusters of 10 - 15 or so flowers are quite common. Its stems are very sturdy and it is always upright in form, never had any branches fall down. The flowers open and fade slowly. Does this help, Sharon? Brenda

What sort of prep do I need to do to paint my wood ceiling?

Thanks for the info on Dirtex. Sierraeast, I'm no wood expert, to be sure. It's possible that it's cedar, but I tend to think not. When we moved a light fixture a couple years ago, the wood under it was decidedly "pine" looking. Most of the wood in the house had been "pickled" in an early 1990s renovation by the previous owners, and we've been slowly "unpickling," so I suspect that may have been done to the ceiling in the kitchen. The semi-transparent stain isn't an option I thought of and i think I'll look into it a bit before I make a final decision. Thanks for the suggestion.

Right now? Not much. March and April are lazy months on the lawn. When the forsythia blossoms (6a is a wide zone, so a locale is helpful), putting down a pre-emergent like Dimension 0-0-7 or Stonewall 0-0-7 will really help reduce your weed problems through part of the season--three to six months respectively depending on which product you use. For you, that's likely to be April sometime. Feed the lawn with any good lawn fertilizer (not a Weed and Feed) around Memorial Day. It seems late, but that's when lawns want to eat. Choose anything with a high first number, and low second and third number (like 35-0-2, or 32-2-6, or something like that). Just get the cheapest, they're all about the same, and choose something with very little slow release nitrogen--it's cheaper and you don't need it. Feed again on Labor Day, October 1st, and (optionally), when the lawn stops growing and you do the last cut for the year. That last one helps store food for the following spring and healthy growth and really helps, but you can skip it if you want. Spray weeds with any good spot-spray, like Ortho Weed B Gon--I go with the Clover, Chickweed, and Oxalis as having a very wide-spectrum kill and taking out most weeds. With the pre-emergent, weeds should be down about 90%, but you'll still get some. If you water the lawn, do it infrequently and deeply. 1" at a time would normally be optimal, but it does vary (a tuna can is 1" deep, which will help you measure). Once a week would be the normal minimum. Very hot weather can mean irrigating more often, but less.

Yes, you are missing the OP's description of where she/he lives. I would assume from the nature of the post that the OP is in the Southern Hemisphere, but without a better reference, I thought I'd at least get the ball rolling. I had a chance of picking right and just the OP is a little late in asking the questions.

Other places where location is extremely ambiguous are Columbia and Ontario. And if you want to get more picky, LA could be Lake Arrowhead or Louisiana, although in 20 years I've never seen someone from Lake Arrowhead write in. And especially for you, WA is common shorthand for the largest state in the world, Western Australia.
