Small kitchen design - work stations instead of the triangle
Comments (3)In a small galley your zones will overlap. It's more about organization than location so that you can have economy of movement when you have a galley. You still need the cardinal points of the triangle: sink, stove, fridge. With those planned so that you can easily move between, and not be butt to butt at any of them, figure out where you're going to prep meals (generally between sink and stove--a place for knives, peeler, etc., cutting boards and bowls), where you're going to do your baking (a good place for mixer, bowls, scrapers, flours, baking spices--might be the same as your prep space, but best if it's in a different little area, perhaps the far side of the stove, where it doubles as a landing area), where you're going to have coffee/toast/snacks (best near the door or eating area) or whatever. Figure out how all your different functions interact, and if you have good fridge access or whatever you need, or if you'll be constantly moving someone in another zone to get at what you'll need. Does that make sense? That is, the place where you prep might also be the landing place for dirty dishes from the table, or the place you roll cookies, or both. The place you use your mixer might also be where you use your food processor and also the landing zone for the fridge. You have to prioritize and really analyze what tasks you have happening all at once so you'll know where to put what. The best thing in a galley for not constantly bumping is a wide enough aisle (at least 48"). The next most important is to develop habits that minimize the dancing, like preparing the coffee (but not turning it on) before starting meal prep, and emptying the clean dishwasher before that so that you can start filling it again, since there's nowhere out of your way to stack dishes....See Morework station type sinks- brands/ competing products
Comments (11)Here's their website. They also do custom. I am sure there are less expensive alternatives but I also wanted a drain at the rear left to free up real estate under the sink so I can fit a roll out trash container. With a garbage disposal smack in the middle, it limits it. Also, with a single basin sink, having an offset drain (to the rear and to the side) enables one to utilize the bottom of the sink more functionally since the drain is not going to be covered by dishes or pans necessarily since they can be placed to the side with drain left uncovered. It's still a family owned business and Alex Havens was extremely helpful to me in terms of helping me with the process. You can definitely see the options - I believe they call the sinks with the ledge to hold cutting boards etc. to be their Legacy models. Comments (6)@Becky H, I found a 20" wood cutting board at HomeGoods that fits our Whitehaven from the apron to the 3/4" reveal. I also like this IKEA trivet for defrosting or for draining a few coffee cups over the sink. Its sturdy and moves easily from sink to counter. The gray IKEA tub gets used every day so it stays in the sink. It is the perfect size for soaking small items like the DW filters, filling with hot soapy water and for gathering the silverware before loading. Even though we use the stainless workstation sink in our island for most prep, there are times when we need to use the Whitehaven for similar tasks. I love being able to prep and chop over both sinks and keep the mess off of the counters. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/laemplig-trivet-stainless-steel-30111087/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9oWV846U9QIVE3xvBB0hZQZWEAQYASABEgIzvvD_BwE https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/grundvattnet-rinsing-tub-gray-80314285/...See Morecpartist
