Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Glass Island Pendants with 8foot ceiling

We have 8 foot ceilings and love the big oversized glass globe look. we are looking at these two fixtures (see pictures) but can only do a 6inch rod and then the glass piece would start. would that look okay?

the person at the lighting store said it would because the tappered glass. we are still not sure if it would look ok!

If you do not have at least 12” of drop, it is no longer a ”pendant”. It is an oversized and awkward semi flushmount fixture. Bulbous glass at the ceiling is NOT a good look.

It is simple math. A pendant fixture cannot be taller than 18” with an 96” ceiling. That gives you the 12” minimum drop, and the bottom of the fixture at 66” above the floor. And this is why most use ”mini” pendants with 96” ceilings.

I think that's going to look a bit odd. On a 6" rod, those will look like a semi-flush fixture with weird proportions. Maybe look around at oversized semi-flush fixtures, to get something with proportions intended to start close to the ceiing.

Have you seen these lit up I find bare bulbs hard on the eyes and also I like island pendants to work like an addition to light the island for work How big is the fixture and where are you putting it over the island we need a bit more info,

lilliepie07 - I am not sure what tricks there are to making the room seem taller. Sounds like you are already done remodelling? All the decorating shows hype over and over about lighter colors making the room seem larger. Is there a specific area that makes you feel its closed in that can be changed with decorating tips? Maybe post a pic here? I just love how everyone on here responds when you post pics and something seems just not quite right and all these extra pairs of eyes point out the obvious things! Sometimes we are too involved up close and personal and GW is such a huge help! Anyways, to make you feel better :) My kitchen is in week 2 of our remodel. We went from 7 foot drop ceilings with a huge flourescent light box to our new spacious 8 feet!! haha It sure seems big to us because of what we had for 26 yrs. We also took out as much wall as we could to the dining room so we went from a 36" opening to 94?? The light from the windows makes it appear large. I am just having a valance in the DR and a roman shade in the kitchen. We are using our old cabinets, so they do not go to the ceiling. Yes, I will put "stuff" up there. But just a few things to accent some colors in the design. We also are going to white painted cabinets, so that will open it up. I am relying on light colors and minimally adorned windows for our larger feel. Good Luck!! We would love to see your space!

8 feet is not so long that you couldn't just do one large fixture of your choice, maybe even a chandelier if that is your style. Check out some of the options from Visual Comfort & Co at Circa Lighting. Your fixture doesn't need to match the shape of your island necessarily.

LARA, It's the same math: If you have 99 ( 8 feet is btw 96" , not 99 ) " and you have a light that IN TOTAL mount and fixture uses up 26 inches, you will have 37 inches from the bottom of the light to the counter top. If you have 96 inches...now you have 34 inches to counter top. If you want to know how it will look, on any you select? You get yourself a ruler, and you draw it out, using one inch, to one foot scale. Chain is easier than stem......so you really need to pay attention to specs, and mounting details. The length of your island must also be VERY much considered. Any solid shade will read heavier and larger than an open lantern or glass shade. Solid shades will direct light to the counter top, and more open or clear fixtures will give you more dispersed light.

you will end up with "close to ceiling fixture" look so search for that...many styles....here are two different styles which span a circumferance to give you suitable specs for island if you cant just do can ceiling lights. I wouldnt do 3 globes.

We have 8ft ceilings and I wanted modern pendants, not mini. I found these 11" ones that look close your examples and you can see the mid-range drop in the pictures. I wanted glass to keep the sightline open as much as possible since the kitchen is not large, but we placed them on a dimmer switch to keep the brightness down when we want. Good luck!

Do you need pendants at all? I have only recessed lighting in my kitchen (which I didn't design - it was like this when I bought the house) and it is fine. When it comes time to remodel I will skip the pendants - and I have 9' ceilings.
