Hi have you thought of keeping a log on the effectiveness of moving particularly frequently?? I grow mostly epiphytes and then mostly orchids . Almost all will grow in very dense shade in fact frequently better . What they don't do is flower well.lol Too much sun and they at least stress at worst sunburn. I keep a log as each plant goes into it's flowering period. How many flowers nd particularly what quality was produced in a given amount of foot candles. I have generally found moving them is counter productive they adapt to certain amounts of light so I never move more than twice a year. A log will give you a lot of info on what works. Even full sun plants that have been grown in shade will often croak when moved suddenly in full sun. I think the magic number is around 3 weeks of steadily increasing light before full exposure. For roses, the union is most commonly at soil level or just above -although in the colder zones it is recommended to plant the union a few inches below surface so that some part of the cane above the rootstock can survive a severe frost. However, even in milder zones, there may be some advantage to planting deeply so that roots will develop both above and below the graft. Roses grafted on briar rootstock establish very much faster than roses on their own roots but own root roses are said to have an indefinite lifespan as compared to grafted. Planting deeply can be a way of having the best of both worlds. Trees, on the other hand - do not take well to having their bark underground. A nurseryman friend tells me that one of the most common reasons for newly planted trees failing is that they are planted too deeply.

I agree that the term is used a lot, but the world has gotten so small that the problem has gotten huge. Invasive plants can wipe out native species and habitats. I used to work for a noxious weed board on the west coast. Some plants that are illegal there are sold in nurseries in my area. It took a while to get over my shock when we first moved here. Most states have weed boards that try to educate the public(many have websites)but not all states enforce eradication. Once you have a solid acre or more of say, Japanese Knotweed, or Purple Loosestrife filling in your lakefront, you come to understand the term "invasive". An example of an invasive species in zone 4 is Knapweed. There is so much of it, people think it is a native...and beekeepers love it. Another is Asian Honeysuckle. One of the reasons these plants are so rampant is because they are not in their native area where there would be natural controls(animals and insects). Most of them have escaped gardens, but some were brought in by the government for erosion control and highway buffers, as in Scotchbroom(the plant that ate the west coast!). The DNR in many states tries to keep these species under control, but they definitely need the help of the public. I'm not meaning to rant, just share a little info :)

You know, I can't remember the name of the japanese beetle traps, but any garden center should have them. I went last week, and forgot to pick up the bait, but tonight I am going and will definitely remember it. I'll post the name tommorow after I get it. They do work though, I was amazed at how many beetles go in there. The bait is supposedly a flower and sex lure. It lures them into the bag, and then they can't seem to get back out. Actually, the bait smells like roses, not bad at all. It comes with a bag that you change as it fills up. And does it fill up! Like I mentioned, I have my husband change the bag because I can't stand the mass of squirming beetles. Although, the bag is not transparent, so you don't have to look at them in there while its out in your garden. He's actually used some type of food storage bags when we ran out of replacement bags for it. It really does help control the beetles. We've used milky spore on our lawn too, because the beetles will go in to the lawn to lay eggs. Then you have the additional problem of the grubs (which are immature japanese beetles) destroying your lawn. The milky spore is some kind of disease for japanese beetles, harmless to humans and pets. I like to avoid the chemical pesticides whenever I can, so these methods work well. Milky spore needs to be applied once every 15 yrs, so it's not too bad. My lawn is due for another treatment now.
