If you could only have 12 roses...
Comments (47)Here is my list of favorites from my garden of about 250. I have several new ones that may join the list soon, but I decided to just list the tried and true. Most are very healthy, bloom a lot and are fragrant. ROUGE ROYALE- This Romantica blooms frequently with huge, fragrant, dark red blooms on strong stems. It is a consistent winner of the Decorative Rose class at shows. SCENTED MEMORY - This rose is very similar to the above, but is an apricot blend. It has huge scented blooms with an old-fashioned multi-petaled form. FIREFIGHTER - To me, this rose should get the Gamble Award for Fragrance. And, in addition to it's wonderful damask fragrance, it has beautiful, velvety dark red blooms. I have two, which in my garden means I love it! SPELLBOUND - This coral rose has exquisite form. It doesn't have much scent, but it is really beautiful. I have two of this one, too! TAHITIAN SUNSET - This is an amazing rose. It is huge in my garden (on fortuniana rootstock) and has huge yellow blend, scented blooms. ELLE - Elle is another constant bloomer with lovely pink blend blooms with a delicious scent. She is a feminine as her name. QUIETNESS - Another very feminine rose of a lovely pale pink and great scent. It is very healthy. NIMBUS - This mauve blend floribunda is has the loveliest color blooms - hard to describe. It has great scent, too. PRETTY LADY - The name says it all! This white and pink floribunda is constantly blooming and seems to be immune to blackspot. PASSIONATE KISSES - Another lovely floribunda in constant bloom with big candy pink blooms. BLACK CHERRY - This is my favorite floribunda. It truly never seems to stop putting out tons of dark red blooms and is extremly healthy. I have Preference, too, and it is very hard to tell the difference. Black Cherry is a little darker red. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE - Another matchless floribunda that blooms all the time with beautiful pink blooms with nice form. It is very healthy also. Whew! That was hard! I love a lot of others that people mentioned but decided to list the ones I really would grow if I could only have twelve. That actually could happen when I grow to old to take care of all the ones I have (That could happen any time!)...See MoreThinking of SP few and need help finding replacement.
Comments (15)Jeri, I live in the North Bay, about 40 miles from SF. We get occasional fog but mostly hot and dry during summer. The North Bay is fortunate enough to be without water rationing this year. The East Bay residents however are hurting. I was in a get together last night and all they were all talking about was how their gardens are starting to turn yellow. Still, most of them were unable to meet the 19% required reduction, a reduction from previous conservation efforts. It seems they have just received the feared notification letter from their county telling them that their efforts have fallen short thus they will be subjected to subsequent penalties. Tough position to be in. On the lighter side, they all decided to come to the house to take their showers and do their laundry. I now see how condition like this could narrow down or affect your choices. You have mentioned in another post that chinas, teas, and noisettes would be best suited to our terroir. I agree. The older roses thrive like weeds here; these plants seem to be able to break the hard soil and squeeze out whatever moisture there is in it. I have Sally Homes and Buff Beauty (musk) planted facing west but continue to be unfazed by the heat and now each at least 8 feet tall. I have a Mutabilis that is hardly watered that has grown 10 feet tall and as wide. I have an Alfred Carriere that is covering more than half of a crabapple tree. And my favorite but shy Tipsy, although unhappy for not getting enough sun, continue to grow and bloom with minimal care. I could not get the picture out of my head of your Lady Banks scrambling over the tree tops. Or the one that wrapped itself around a pine tree in a Sacramento cemetery. What a magnificent plant. You had me with GrandmotherÂs Hat and its clone. Sorry for the interruption. Bobby...See MoreOT: How old are we??

Comments (23)We had the bike ride yesterday. While we were waiting for the riders to get there and sign I was chatting with some of the other ladies in the club (also sewers). I showed them the areas of the quilt I was unhappy with and they both said "that is nothing, you should see some of the thing my machine does". Then it turns out the winner was her husband (purely luck of the draw with rider numbers). She was very happy with it. Then while chatting with some of the riders when they came back in, I found out one of them was familiar with long arms. He agreed with my assessment of my machine and just getting caught up in the transition of ownership. He said a good internal cleaning should help, but since they are coming out with a new Voyager perhaps a deal could be struck for a new one. That was encouraging. beverly...See Morestillanntn6b
