Crown gall--it kills me
Comments (3)Well, being that ANGEL FACE is a pretty easy to find rose, I think I'd replace it. But.... my all-time favorite rose, BUTTERSCOTCH CL, got crown gall over 10yrs ago when we lived in the mobile home park. It wasn't a lot, but enough that I wasn't about to let it take over. I cut and scraped it all out and poured either alcohol or bleach (can't remember now what I used) and it has been going strong ever since. I haven't really looked at the base of the plant for yrs, but I'm not really too worried about it. The dang thing grows like a weed all over the place, so if it does have any gall, it must not be hampering it too much!!...See MoreReviving gall bladder discussion
Comments (33)Always best to get the doctor to check it out. I had my gallbladder out many years ago because I had huge stones and had tried passing a couple. Horrible pain. After removal I immediately began having terrible pain, cramps and diarrhea. I unfortunately had Bile Dumping syndrome. I don't wish it on my worst enemy. Truly dreadful condition. I could not eat with out being very near a bathroom because it would hit so hard and fast that I might not make it there. This for quite some time caused me to be home bound. I learned where every bathroom was in every store, restaurant, believe me. I learned to always have a bag packed with me just in case. I was put on Questran powder which helped a little. In my case it didn't matter at all what I ate, everything caused it. I still have bouts of it today, it's never ending. I still always make sure I don't eat with out having facilities near by. My husband knows if I say find a bathroom now it means right this second not a few miles down the road. I have medicine that helps control the horrible spasms and rolling cramps. Occasionally it triggers vomiting too. Oh joy! I try to warn friends and family that are about to under go gallbladder surgery to be aware of this possibility so they aren't blindsided by it like I was. I thought I was dying the first time it hit me. And in several cases they have also developed Bile dumping syndrome. They were all thankful that I had warned them because they too thought they were dying. They were able to get the proper care because they were familiar with my situation. My nephew was one of them and unfortunately he has it about as bad as I do. I don't know if mine will ever completely go away, I doubt it will. I am not sure I would have had the surgery at the time if I knew I would have this condition from it. I think I would have waited until it was absolutely essential. By the way the dumping refers to the sudden dumping of Bile into the system , not the other kind of dumping lol....See MoreDyna-gro Pro-tek or Maxicrop for rose midge?
Comments (36)Dave- I haven't used it yet. CoriAnn uses it. I'll ask her. I'll let everyone know if I see any improvement to anthracnose after I foliar spray since I don't have much blackspot. I'll also see if it helps with aphids since I have these too. Patty- funny in a not funny, haha, way! I think "ironic" might be the better word. Is anthracnose as bad a disease as black spot? My roses look awful but they still have their leaves unlike with bs. And some of the Kordes are fine as is Julia and my DA Windermere and Queen of Sweden. I'm still learning. Since it doesn't cause complete defoliation I'm thinking (hoping) it might be the lesser of two evils. I haven't sprayed yet, partly out of laziness but mostly out of concern for the environment. So many of these products are harmful to aquatic life. Our property abuts a designated swamp. I'd hate to cause damage to the eco-system there. My hydrangeas and hostas look fine so it doesn't seem as bad as yours. I'll let you know when I use the Pro-tekt. With luck it just might do what it says it does. Wouldn't that be great :-) Kelp4Less has silica powder available for hydroponics. According to the info it has recently been approved asa plant nutrient recognized by science. It's helpful for those who especially grow in raised beds or pots which CoriAnn does. I have bought from Kelp4Less. They're a bit pricy but have great service and organic products. The video is a bit long but here's the link if anyone is interested- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB5pBCdnMTE Dave- it seems according to the Kelp4Less is used as a drench not a foliar spray. It might be because they are geared more to hydroponics though. Their's is neutral ph. There are 9 reviews by buyers that say they see improvement in stem strength, leaf strength and disease resistance. I don't think CoriAnn gets much disease in CA where she gardens but she does get extreme heat and uses Pro-tekt for heat and drought stress. Sharon...See Moreso- is this midge?
Comments (46)Samuel and Jim- definitely something to think about. But Moses might have rose midge because neighbors have it in their gardens. How do you control what your neighbors do or don't do? Look at how RRV is spread. Some posters here have written almost crying in despair of neighbors having diseased roses yet refusing to do anything about it. I hate using pesticides but I want to try to get this under control before it takes over my garden. I live in a very rural neighborhood. The nearest house is about 300 feet away through the woods. I think I'm the only rose grower on our road so the rose midge have had to come in from either a nursery or mail order roses unless they eat native plants too. We don't even have any multiflora rose near my house. So I may be able to contain this by using all the methods available and due diligence in the future. Rinsing all the soil from my mail order roses and possibly full submersion in water for a short period of time or buying bare root own root roses. I'm also using the cups and covering the planting area with plastic or landscape fabric. Some of my roses came with spider mites a couple years ago. I had never had spider mites before. The only pests I had were aphids, grasshoppers, JB's and voles, can't forget the voles. Sharon...See MoreSeniorBalloon
