Please Explain This Shower?

From a listing for a $11 milion dollar brownstone in Brooklyn Heights which sold recently. By way of background it was used as the Moonstruck home although I don't know what has been altered since shooting

What is the purpose of the shower being constructed in this manner? Is there some structural reason or was this simply an aesthetic decision?

Also being elevated would seem to be a safety issue and the towel rack seems oddly located - it either blocks the exit from the shower or is away from both the tub and the shower exit.

And what is what appears to be some kind of lamp over the bathtub which extends from the wall?
