Design Dilemma Kitchens

Waterfall island counter. What about 1-1/2" thickness?

Designing a kitchen and want 1-1/4" stone countertops, but at island with waterfall ends want to increase stone thickness to 1-1/2". I see images with the thickness in that range, but wonder what drawbacks there might be as to durability. Stone's pretty hard to break, right?

You either miter it all to fake the thickness, or you miter none. You also need to design the required electrical outlets on both ends of the island. Putting that outlet in the middle of the stone is a horrible way to do that. Do something else, facing the island front. And design in the steel support for that overhang while you are at it too. Plus how to fasten the whole thing to the floor. All of those details have to be designed and diagrammed, and overseen. Lots of moving parts here on the design end. And lots of failure if undesigned.

Keep the same thickness as the top for the sides.

Are you talking about using either 2 cm or 3 cm slabs? I've never actually seen them measured in inches. Presuming that's what you mean, there are a lot of threads on that topic here. Type "2 cm vs 3 cm granite site:gardenweb.com" into your search engine and you'll turn some up. The bottom line is that you can use either for your islands. The 2 cm slabs are placed with a plywood underlayment and generally have another 2 cm strip of granite laminated onto the edge to give a nice edge finish and cover up the plywood. 3 cm slabs don't need an underlayment and have a nice fat edge for finishing built in. 2 cm slabs are more popular (i.e. more available) on the west coast and 3 cm more popular on the east coast, but that is not a universal comment on availability. I live on the west coast and I have 3 cm granite. Functionally you can go either way and be comfortable about your decision. When you're looking at costs, be sure to factor in the extra fabrication expense for the laminated edge and the extra expense of fabricating a stone that eats up the fabricator's saw blades like the really hard quartzites.

Soapstone backsplash - how thick - 3/4 or 1 1/4?

Our soapstone backsplash is 3/4". My DH cut it from left over stone from our counter install. We tried out the 1 1/4" to see if we liked it but it just seemed too thick. But ours is only 2" tall. Maybe a taller backsplash would look ok with the thicker stone. You might want to try out some scrap soapstone to see if you like it before committing to size. I have some pics in the link below. I have the 1 ½ and I love it. The large side fits all of my biggest sheet pans, roasting pans, etc. I've never not had anything fit in the large side. I like to be able to have dirty dishes in one side and have a separate, clean side to use for other things (draining pasta, washing fruits and vegetables, discarding food scraps down the disposal, etc). I have also been using a nifty roll up drying rack (as suggested by romy!) which lays across the large bowl so as to not take up any counter space, gives me access to the large bowl underneath since it only goes halfway across, leaves me the small sink for other tasks, AND rolls up and stores neatly under the sink when not in use! (photo from Bed, Bath, & Beyond...not my sink)

OK. I'm posting my updated drawing of the floor plan along with an old computerized one a designer did for me that has a lot of things off. Also, here's her picture of the main part of the kitchen. In the unpictured side of the kitchen, the current plan is to put a corner window bench and small table plus recessed shelving/cabinetry in the wall to the dining room (that gets complicated, but it's probably just important to know where that wall is - namely the surface facing the dining room is 12" to the right of the window; how thick that wall is depends on where it starts relative to the window in the kitchen, but it currently starts 7" to the right of it). *edited to add a rendering of the "unpictured" side of the kitchen where the recessed shelving is represented as pictures plus shelves because I'm not good with tedious things. I'll add that I don't like open floor plans and we close the doors so we have separate spaces for my son to do zoom classes and such almost every day.

As far as durability, the apparent engineered stone in your last picture needs support at the cantilever over a span that long, no matter what the manufacturer says. That will be particularly tricky with the full overlay doors.

Without mechanical support, the estone will sag and when it does, the miter at the waterfall must self-destruct. Same for natural stone. Prevent on paper first please.

Is that a range in the corner on an angle, or does the rendering just look odd there? I hope it’s not a range at an angled corner.
