Remodeling Design Dilemma Exterior

Metal roof as accent on home

We are researching metal roof as a possibility for part of our home roof (would be an accent area). Standing seam vs corrugated seems to be the decision we’d need to make if we go with metal (vs sticking with asphalt shingles to match the rest of the home if we ditch the metal idea). Interested in insights from others who have considered this / gone the metal roof route. Thanks! (My research thus far suggests standing seam will be 2-3x more expensive but also superior to corrugated in longevity and maintenance; my contractor seemed to prefer corrugated to save us money (and maybe because easier installation?) but I believe fully supports whatever we choose; color wise we would want a medium to darkish brown in case that makes a difference…)

Standing seam roof is also 2-3x more visually appealing. Do you have pictures of your home you can share? That makes a difference too.

There are a few issues to consider. Corrugated iron and rib-lock types of utility building metal are not capable of being adapted to a "detailed" roof, i.e.: a roof with valleys and dormers, without great difficulty/expertise of a very experienced mechanic. Previously-used corrugated roofing will be an expedient way to cover a roof in an emergency, but the problem will be the old nail holes and the fact that it should be installed over purlins (horizontal strapping on top of the rafters). That lumber expense alone may disqualify the choice. There is also going to be a condensation issue. You would need to lay rosin paper (not tarpaper) under the metal. Good luck. Casey

@Jon Alan - this is a custom house that we are about to pour the foundation for so the structure is pretty much set at this point. (Thanks for checking first - LOL!) To clarify, the inspiration house was inspiration for colors more than shape/structure. (The inspiration house is in an area prone to flooding which ours is not and we wanted to keep it lower.) As far as a black/gray brick, we really like the warmth of the redder tones and haven't cared for other homes we've seen with black/gray brick so I don't see us going that route.

Why oh why do people insist on taking pictures with the house shaded, then request opinions on color? Take the picture when the sun is at your back and the front of the house is in natural light. And yes to a nice, soft sage green. It’s lovely in a wooded setting, and if the house tends to get mold, it will be much less obvious. Lovely house!

As alluded to by Glo above, if you are looking at the roof to be primarily foe aesthetic purposes you would absolutely use standing seam, corrugated will not do anything for the look except make it look like you cheeped out or stole the roofing from the shed or chicken coop.

Existing home in real life (front) is pictured below. We plan to change paint color to some version of taupe/greige that compliments our stone, and we like the idea of accenting with a darker brown - metal roof could be a nice way to add such an accent, we’re thinking. Also, because we’re not replacing our entire roof, the newness of the shingles will probably contrast a little with our 10-year-old existing roof shingles. Using metal for the connector might be a nice way to diminish this concern…

We added the second floor with the dormers and the porch with the green standing seam rooof. We love it and get a lot of compliments.
