Fireplace + Family Room Help

Hello! We are moving into a house that has a cozy/step-down room. This room has a wood burning stove fireplace, brick, and natural light. Our plan is to add carpet, a big L-shaped couch, and mount a TV above the fireplace. Also would love to add cabinets around the fireplace.

We wanted carpet to make it cozy, the rest of the house is all wood floor. Anyone have ANY design tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I don't love the wood-burning fireplace and would consider removing entirely but keeping the brick/mantle. Room is 15 ft x 12 ft.

I think I would narrow that large entry doorway to gain wall space, especially to avoid mounting TV above the FP. It is a very small room for any kind of "big" couch. Since you've only shown us parts of two walls, we really can't give you too much specific advice. Any cabinets built either side of the FP will stick out and recess the FP itself, also eating some of your 12 feet of floor space. If you don't really like the FP, remove it. Are those the only windows in the room? Show us all walls and maybe we can help more.

There's wood floors in the kitchen also? It looks like tile? Sorry, but in that second photo, it looks choppy. You have hardwood, and tile in the family room and kitchen, however, the tiles are different.

Ditto on no to painting brick. It's one of the better looking ones I've seen. Be thankful it's not red brick or brown. I don't think you will gain anything painting it. I think it is modern looking. It's, I hate to say it, it's the TV that makes it look bad not the brick. But I understand that there is just not a good place for the TV in your room. If you don't really use the fireplace maybe put the tv in front of the fire box and put something nice on the mantle.

I dont think a sectional is right for this room. you would get a lot more function out of sofa and chairs. Leave the tv on that wall but center it too the wall. pull the sofa off the wall . try centering it to the fireplace wall first. then try centering it to the tv next to the fireplace. you need to get used to the idea that the couches do not need to be on walls here.

I'm not sure what stretching the offset fireplace across the wall accomplishes. And tile doesn't seem like the correct material to use either. Why not keep the brick and paint it white and then build in shelves to the side in the same color? Doesn't have to be arched.

Yes we planned to add a carpet into the fireplace room to soften up the choppiness.

Why not extend the wood? It is very cozy.

Consider a wood burning stove fireplace insert.
