Advice on building railing

last year

I have a small section in my living room that needs railing, about 78” long. I found pics of what i like online. Is this something i can order online and install myself? or should i find someone to build it? if so, what kind of company/person should i look for? its such a small section and will be going on hard wood floor. Thank you for pointers. pic of what i want to do.

I hope you don't have young children They would love to climb that horizontal rail.

Good point! I do have children but not super young. I will have furniture in front of it. Definitely something to consider. I like the horiztonal look over the vertical but yea safety first.

Painting will not look right and it will not hold up. There are firms that will come in and spray (refinish) your treads and bannister because that is what I did. Then you can paint the spindles. My staircase was similar all one color from 1970s.

You only need a handrail on the knee wall side. If you try to add a tailing on the other side it will look out of place, unless you have little kids and you worry about them climb or walk the ledge, you can put something to prevent that from happening, but it would still be easier to teach them not to go up there.

The post I mentioned would not be at the bottom tread so the design of a continuous handrail would have to bypass the post to get to a newel at the bottom tread and there would need to be a guard at the new opening whether it be solid, balusters, etc. At first glance it seems a potentially messy solution. Perhaps the handrail could be at the other side and the guard could terminate at the post. The bottom tread should have had returns at each side. Its looks like a abasement stair in the entryway.

I think no cap is unique and give a sleek modern touch! Cap is more classic look so can’t go wrong if you do add. 2 good options honestly but I vote no cap

This is enthusiastic intermediate or advanced DIY work. Give yourself an honest assessment please.

Expect to pay several thousand dollars in labor, finishing excluded.

We found a custom iron worker to build our steel railing. Google ornamental iron gates, etc. It ended up being a little over 2k. Many folks wouldn't even come bid as the job was too small. We thought about diy, but in the end I am so glad we paid.
