NEED ADVICE! Wooden Bedroom Furniture

last year

My mother-in-law is giving us all their old bedroom furniture. It’s solid mahogany.
Would I be silly not to take it and run?
What do you think the pieces are worth.
Not sure who made it but can find out.

if that's your style, great.

Funny how parents feel better handing off the decision to get rid of it to the kids.

I would sell it to someone that truly loves it and do something fun with the inlaws.

Only of you love it.

If you think you will see it for a significant profit, think again. Most people will gladly take it for free, but I doubt you will get many buyers. I could be wrong.

If you look at the floor color in the 2nd photo you posted, if you can find a complementary style to your furniture, in a similar color and finish to that floor, I think it would work with your black furniture. Or here they mixed a bit darker wood with black: Gray works here with some black and cream accents: Maybe a med wood tone with black metal accents:

3katz I’m sure your bedroom will be lovely! my point in describing our setup was that nothing matches— not a single thing matches the exact finish or wood species or color or material of anything else. We have furniture in our bedroom that is wood, painted wood, metal and upholstered. There’s no need to restrict your choices to all one wood finish or style or period. That said, if you start with the bed I would suggest one with a padded headboard and order a slipcover later for it from a vendor like the one Mtn linked to. That gives you something to sleep on in a neutral color, the ability to change it, and a good starting place to add almost anything.

Maybe keep some pieces that will work with what you have or help fill an empty house, but pass if you don’t think you would use or love it.

Only take this if you really love it, because it will probably be really awkward to get rid of it while your in-laws are still alive. I've refused just about all offers of heirlooms from parents and in-laws, because I don't want set up situations that make me wish for their deaths.

Do you like the sets? Do you have bedrooms for both sets? If the answer is no to both, suggest that the in-laws give it to other relatives.

Look for manufacturer's labels, often inside a top dresser drawer. Then you can do a search to see if these pieces have sold recently near you.

Haha I’m laughing at all the comments. Thanks for the advice. I think they are built well and could possibly be painted but I’m not sure she would like that 🤷‍♀️.

Do yourself a favor. Pass. : ) Unless you love or need a PIECE OR TWO. Once you own a piece.......or two? It is yours to do as you please. Paint....sell..........so be warned on that lol

I'd take the four poster , paint it it and make a guest or little girls room. That's it.

I'm faced with this same situation right now. We're selling my mom's home and its furniture. I have 2 houses full of furniture and don't want/need any more. The problem is that no one wants it, unless it's MCM. It's going to be a chore just disposing of it before closing. :(

The answer is that it isn’t worth much except that it appears to be good quality furniture. If you like it and can use it that is the value since good quality furniture is expensive

The first photo is Arts & Crafts in style and is still popular. Check out Stickley furniture amd you will get a sense of how much the new stuff sells for. Not that you should decorate with stuff you don’t like but that style - Craftsman, Mission, Stickley, Arts & Crafts is popular. My kitchen was remodeled and inspired by Arts & Craft and I have vintage pieces. I wouod use that set in terms of my taste but with contemporary touches.

The second set is Colonial inspired and not seen except in the most traditional style homes and even then probably bought years ago by people your parents’ age who are now downsizing amd so the market is flooded

I doubt you could give it away and I mean that literally as my local Good Will will not take any beds - even wood bed frames because of bedbug issues

We have experienced the DEATH of brown furniture, Sad as it CAN still be quite wonderful when not overloaded into a room in a matched up way. Don't drown the room......make it the stand out Give it light and air.

Which is why I said...take the four poster.

Remember too, that twenty five/ thirty years ago? You could find MCM on a curb, begging for a home. You probably were in a stroller or not yet conceived :) There's a lot of boring brown furniture, crummy reproductions.....BUT. there exists a lot of sturdy , great stuff. You need a bit of courage to not always stay on the often unwise trend path......by passing quality for fad/ imported .....crapola
