Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/7
Comments (27)@yeonassky thank you for sharing. I appreciate how she approaches the importance of form. Because I was an athlete many years ago, I struggle when returning to exercise because I have unrealistic expectations of what I can do.. or what I think I should be able to do. I am not going to be able to start out running a few miles, swimming miles or dropping to do 20 perfect pushups. I CAN build up to them though-- and I love that the video emphasizes using the correct form even when doing a much modified version of the pushup. Thank you. @pricklypearcactus I am so sorry you are dealing with these issues! I totally get the challenges of eating out with dietary limitations. I feel uncomfortable even with family who go out of their way to serve foods I can eat-- I don't want them to prepare something special for me. I don't want to add to their planning/cooking tasks! On the other side though, it is so awkward to go to a restaurant or dinner party and not be able to eat anything. I could get by without gluten at home but it would definitely be a struggle outside of the home. And you are right, i need to just make a set time for exercise. Early morning is a possibility. I start my day very early but that time from 5/5:30 to 8am is pretty sacred to me. It's when I get the most work done and I really value the quiet time before the frequent interruptions, problems, questions start flowing in. In my 40s, I used to run at lunchtime. It was a great break in the day and a great way to work off the frustrations of the day. I think I'll try both carving out 40 min in the morning first and at lunch and see which feels better. @legomom23 I don't think it is all calories in/out for me either. I know my metabolism plays a factor also. I really did't overeat regularly and I didnt eat high calorie foods regularly-- I can't explain why I have struggled with my weight for so long (basically all my life). I would compare my eating with that of my siblings or my bff-- and I would eat so much less but weigh so much more. I have learned to accept this, it is what it is, but I try to build my weight loss strategies around that. As I've said before, IF works very well for me and I suspect it has to do with my metabolism. And of course, I need to add muscle-building exercise! That has such further reach than just the energy expended/calories burned. I definitely need to get moving with exercise NOW. (She says as she gets ready to go out for the morning vs exercising)...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/30
Comments (21)I’m still maintaining the weight loss. Yes, I’m a scale-slave too but not every day anymore like I used to be. Some days I’m down a pound or two and other days it's back up those 1-2 lbs. I'm OK with that right now as I feel healthy and fit. My Pilates instructor is on a long vacation overseas so my classes are down to 1/week instead of 2 since she couldn't find someone to sub. It's ok but we all miss her classes. We have workouts she created in the Trainerize app we can do and I've been doing those at least twice a week. One thing that has helped both of us is eating a very small meal in the evening. We are actually eating less for all meals but occasionally have a larger meal at lunch instead of dinner. We also have more fresh veggies from our garden…lots of tomatoes, squash, cukes, peppers. So I've been trying to cook with those and supplement from the farmer's market. And my favorite fruit, peaches, are in season, so that is usually breakfast. Funky, if we need a group trip to Iceland count me in! Congrats to everyone doing so well in your weight loss and healthy life progress!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 1/7/2024
Comments (14)I read these weekly, and always mean to write earlier in the week. But something causes me to wait until later. I've picked up weight training again these past few weeks, and my body feels sore and good! I've listened to a few podcasts about longevity lately, and, like Gscience's article, there is no doubt that strength training is essential. One longevity expert/researcher even cited a study where, out of all the exercise options, strength training was shown to better reduce cancer. Don't ask me to cite it... it's long buried in my list of podcasts. But it's part of the overall and very clear message that we need to maintain muscle as we age. Saying that, my shoulders and arms are especially sore because I shoveled snow twice yesterday (the heavy "heart attack" snow), and I have to shovel one more time today before temps drop. My driveway and sidewalk are not long, but just long enough that it's a physical challenge. And I remind myself how fortunate I am to be able to manage this on my own. Food-wise, I'm doing ok, but have had a few extra sweets that I don't normally have, thanks to DS's late-night trip for ice cream. But I haven't eaten out since the holidays, and so lots of homemade food. Yesterday, I made a cauliflower lentil curry soup that was filling and delicious. I agree, Funky--this is soup weather. I enjoy the process of making soup, and especially vegetable based so I can use whatever I have on hand. Sue's chili sounds like my next one....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 3/3/2024
Comments (16)yum, GS! I so love halibut! I haven't been keeping up with the thread this week, my apologies! I am doing ok-- keeping on, as they say. One major misstep was picking up an irish soda bread -- a fav. I was not as restrained as I thought I would be. Good thing it was a small one! Otherwise I have maintained a pretty healthy diet. The grazing lunch plates are working out well ... they are especially good when I would otherwise skip lunch due to meetings or the need to get something done. They are easy and I can eat them as I am working. A lot of people like to do meal prep and assemble them on Sundays but it works pretty well for me to assemble them as my coffee is brewing in the early morning... then they are just ready to grab come lunchtime. I have been struggling a bit with body dismorphia ... probably because I have been basically maintaining since Sept. I look at myself and just don't see the losses I have accumulated... so when I ordered a pair of shorts recently, I ordered a higher size than I should have. No big deal, I can exchange them-- but it was a warning flag that my body image may not be accurate. I think maintaining a positive body image will always be a struggle for me and something I need to work on more actively. Definitely looking forward to more light in the evening! It is rainy and dark today but need to get out and active. I've only done so once this week so far! Sorry this is a delayed response but Jococo, glad to hear you are making time for self care! Hair appts always help me-- not only do I look better, but I love those 2 hrs at the salon that are all about me!...See MoreFunkyart
