Comments (26)Wolfgang, The house you lived in sounds quite lovely. I have heard how cold tile is on bare feet from my DH. He is a carpet man! I am sure I will have gel mats or throw rugs between the island and the cooktop and by the sink. I am a very messy cook, and spill something making every meal. We have a dog and cat, who would be rather hard on wood. My dog sloshes water at a great rate. I think tile will hold up pretty well. I understand your preference for disguised appliances. I thought about doing that. I have seen some striking kitchens with appliances hidden. Our kitchen is an amalgamation of new and old. If the kitchen were truly period, it would make more sense to hide appliances. But our kitchen is designed to be compatible with our 1892 house rather than replicate an original kitchen. Hiding some appliances are budget busters, and we will keep the existing refrigerator. I had the KD check into hiding the oven behind pocket doors. It takes too much cabinet space; it required a much wider and deeper cabinet to be accomplished. I don't have room to spare in the kitchen. As long as one appliance is in its natural state, so to speak, the DW may as well be too. A paneled DW doesn't seem like it would wear very well, either. The MW and a small convection oven are in the cabinet to the left of the refrigerator behind pocket doors....See More95% done! Marble w/quartz, polished w/honed, and other no-no's
Comments (49)cjc123, sabjimata, flwrs-n-co, jkom51, mtnrdredux thanks! We are really enjoying the new space. It is so much more functional and easy to work in. Ginger25 and jenhp: "Blizzard" is warmer than the pure white or organic white from Caesarstone. I think it works better with the rusty Danby marble than those purer whites. Here are some closeups of the Caesarstone, as requested (these are in artificial light): You have to get REALLY close up (3 inches in this case) to see the fine speckles. From farther back but as close as a foot, it reads solid white: Elba1, the uppers are 37 inches tall. The trim between the cabinets and ceiling is under 2 inches, just enough to tie the cabinets to a little bit of a crooked ceiling. There is also a 1 inch light rail underneath the uppers, to hide the under cabinet lights. The ceiling is 8 feet. I thought about incorporating some glass, but I wanted to avoid breaking up the space, for a more contemporary look. If my ceilings were higher, I would have considered a top glass section as well!...See MoreCabinet Color - what do you love?
Comments (20)LoPay, my husband is halfway through his career teaching in our suburban high school system; unless he commutes 45 minutes, we are far away from the glorious older homes. I'm jealous of your Big10 town! MSRose, sorry, I don't know the color. The builder prefers Sherwin Williams, so I bet it's from their line, maybe they can color match from photos? We went back to look at the dark kitchen again. I've been wheeling and dealing for a white kitchen this whole time. I was shocked how much I liked the dark kitchen posted above. We've been seeing lots of walnuts paired with slate and dark granites and gold/brown walls--I think they look like caves (not my taste). Somehow this one seemed to go very dark yet have enough light to feel open--maybe the shiny white backsplash? I feel in love, but it's against my instincts, which say to stay light and airy. I like the dark/light contrast, but fear that cave look. Posting a pic of the original model of the house we're building. It was lovely but seemed too dark (I know for some that's cozy and desirable). While we're trying to keep from being too trendy, it's more a question of will white "feel" warm enough to us and/or can dark be offset enough to avoid cave feel? So hard to picture, but you can't really go back once you make the final choice. Gulp. Thanks all for so many good thoughts!...See MoreOur new house is finished! My white kitchen...
Comments (112)Nini - on your first post, you said you'd do a separate post about honed and polished marble. Pros and cons to both. Have you done that and if not, would you do one or send me an email. We have chosen statuetto white marble for our island and I plan to go with honed (after testing polished). I'd like to hear your experiences. Thanks!...See Moredboone330
