Comments (2)Thomis, P.serotina is the preferred food for Eastern Tent Caterpillars - but they do get on other species - I noticed several 'tents' in apple trees in my orchard earlier this week. Manual removal is about as effective as anything I've tried. Google up ETCs, and there should be plenty of info on control measures to attempt. They rarely cause any long-term damage. P.serotina is in full bloom here now - I'm seeing trees with tents & flower clusters. So...I'm presuming either yours are still too young - though I see trees less than 10 ft tall blooming - or you've just not noticed them in bloom....See MoreNon fruit bearing trees
Comments (3)One possibility that comes to mind with the pears is that some pears are pollen sterile. Have both trees been flowering for a few years already. I wonder if the tree that's producing is pollen sterile and therefore not pollinating the other tree. Some pears are very slow to come into production. That's another possibility. Most of my apples have been in the ground about 6 years. Only about half of them have fruited just a little so far. I suspect I met have sped things up if I had given them more care (mulching, more watering, etc.)...See Morepruning a flowering quince (non-fruiting)
Comments (3)probably could take it all the way down.. a 'run it over with the truck' type plant ... but just pick 1/3 to 1/2 ... and cut them out ... then next year.. take those out ... no real need to make it a 3 years project ... the problem is cutting at height ... frankly.. if you cut one .. at ground.. it will be nearly the same size by next summer... if you do that at say 4 feet.. then it will be 4 feet plus another 4 feet.. and it will all flop ... that is the point with rejuvenation pruning... cutting to the ground ... ken...See MoreFavorite trees/shrubs (non-fruit) for Espalier?
Comments (6)I have been doing some research on the subject and came across a book called 'Living Fences a gardener's guide to Hedges, Vines and Espaliers' authored by Ogden Tanner and he suggests, Acer Palmatum varieties, Eastern redbud, flowering quince, cotoneaster, and winter jasmine for informal espaliers, as well as camellia, cedrus atlantica glauca, forsythia, holly, firethorn, yew and viburnum for both formal and informal designs. Also the book contains many different forms and how to achieve each one. I am still trying to decide as I need to also consider deer problems in the winter....See Morekitasei2
