Another red oak stain question--leaning into the red?
We've got flooring installation and refinishing happening in two weeks. I'd love to get advance advice on colors, so I can ask for the best samples off the bat. Finish will be Bona Traffic HD. I think the stain options are also Bona, not sure on that. Kitchen cabinets will be white and natural walnut, and there's a giant pink limestone fireplace in the kitchen and living room. I've got a set of Bona samples, and the colors I like best against walnut are not the colors I think look best against the limestone. Wondering how best to split the difference.
So, with that said, would appreciate answers and opinions to the following questions.
1. How orange will red oak turn over time? Finish will be Bona Traffic, so I know the poly itself won't amber. But how much orange will oak aging contribute, if we go with no stain at all? I'm fine with red tones, but I HATE orange.
2. What floor color do you think is ideal with walnut cabinets (and several walnut furniture items)?
3. What color do you think is ideal with the limestone?
Attaching pictures with samples of our kitchen materials, and a picture of the living room side fireplace. Please ignore the paint color. It's already been changed, and we'll paint again once we see the final new floor color.

The shellac gives me the aged look or yellowing and the two seam to work well together. Some times we tint the top coat a little. Comments (2)yeah, i don't think you can make red oak look like white oak. i have several french antique pieces in european red oak. it is very dark, and i love it. i bought some antique chairs recently to go with a red oak table. i thought they were dark too, but they are in white oak. i believe that i can make the white oak chairs darker, but vise versa is another story. i would definitely make him redo those cabs in the wood that you chose. he should not have changed that without your permission. i hate it when i pay someone for a product/service and they just take it upon themselves to do what they want to do. my poolbuilder moved my pool about a foot and a half without telling me. i noticed it was not lined up with a planter after it was built and he admitted that he had done this. i guess its too late to make him fill that pool in and re-dig another one a foot and a half over. but, i would consider cabinets a different story. make him do it over....See MoreStain recommendation to reduce red/pink tone in red oak flooring

They are original 1922 red oak floors and were so orange when we bought it. Comments (2)Yes. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish ash from red oak. Especially if all you have to look at is a short section of board. Finely tuned eyes will see the difference but that isn't most people....See More

last yearlast modified: last yearheres a few. the last is a MCM style home and they used an ebonized / all over dark look. that probably is the best interpretation but not everyone likes such a dark floor. i would steer away from just a natural finish...too rustic....I like the grain evened out a bit for long term think its better......I'd probably end up w the 2nd pic or so which is Provincial stain I think they said.

last yearThanks again to all! We ended up compromising with a 75% Natural/25% Provinicial (Duraseal) with Bona IntenseSeal on top. Dark enough for the look I was hoping for, but lets some of the red warmth through that DH loves.
