Apple tree blooming a second time

Hi! so I live in Southern california (zone 9b or sunset zone 18) And purchased a ”ultra dwarf self fertile ana apple” tree last september. the tree went decidious and flowered in march before leaves appeared. however, these blossoms just wilted and lots of leaves replaced them. I noticed 2 blossoms came out again a few days ago and it appears at the tip of all the new growth apple blossoms are appearing!? Is this normal/ok to have a second bloom into almost July? it also appears they are forming into apples (could be wrong though).

Check out the 'chill requirement' of your particular apple tree.

If it was an exceptionally mild winter, it may not have achieved a long enough cool period and this may have confused the tree. Even apples developed in the Bahamas, i.e 'Golden Dorsett' need somewhere around 250-300 hrs. of 'cold' dormancy.

with transplants.. weird things can happen. like reblooming out of season ..

you have to wonder what pollinated it.. unless they pollinated each other ... or themselves ...

we are not sure about the history here.. new purchase this spring.. was march the proper planting time.. was it potted or ball and burlap... how did you plant it.. how did you water..

if planted properly .... including at the proper time.. it shouldnt have lost all its leaves ...

I thin the clusters to one apple in the first year and like to see as many as possible without breaking limbs or something. I am trying to grow apples. If I want to grow firewood I will grow ash. If your apple tree is not producing at least 40 pounds of apples for you in the fourth year, and about half that much in the third, then you need to do something different. I have fertile soil.

kristie: Granny Smith on a semi-dwarf rootstock would normally begin to bloom in year 3 to year 5. If you are super-lucky, less, if you are not so lucky, could be more. There is no rule controlling onset of bloom. I had a Granny here that took 7 years to begin blooming, and never did bloom very well before I gave up and took it out. Now I know that summer pruning and shaping might have helped, but I did not know that then. Whether or not a tree blooms is not controlled by the presence or absence of other trees, insect pollinators etc., but by the readiness of the tree itself. Once you begin to see blooms, cross-pollination can become very important. Granny is not an easy apple to pollinate, and there will have to be a pollinating tree within insect striking distance, but it does not have to be in your yard. It could be 100 yards down the street, and it could be a decorative flowering crab or any other type of apple tree. But yes, it does have to be some kind of apple. Basically you don't spray while the trees are in bloom and the bees are around. You can spray up until the buds get pink tips, then again just after petal fall. Really depends what you are spraying for as to when and how frequently. I have apple scab issues, so I'm best to spray with a fungicide when the leaves first show, maybe again just before bloom (pink tip), then again after petal drop, maybe again 10 days after that. Technically I should probably continue spraying every 10-14 days into August, but with scab it is the initial spring infection that can destroy a crop, secondary infections once summer has set in cause very little problem so you really only need to spray for that if you want all of your apples to be perfect. Apple maggot or other insects are a different matter. I've never had problems with those so don't spray for them and can't really offer any advice there.

I think the sun-starved fruit tends to drop early for lack of adequate energy. I didn't keep up with scab on pears- I actually didn't realize that it can be a season long battle when it's as wet as it was this year. My 2 Boscs are 60% defoliated and dropped pears early though some are still on tree as did Highland which lost most pears too early to be worth anytning. Seckels did the same, but at least they have decent sugar. Bartlett and another unknown Bartlett type, but later, have completely healthy foliage and great fruit. Aurora stayed healthy but fruits not sweet enough. Most of the Honeycrisp apples, where foliage was fine, dropped a bit before ideal ripeness, or would have if I didn't pick them. Jonagold is thinning itself more than I'd like. All other apples were or are fine. I don't care at all about sooty blotch and fly speck.

Let's clarify a few things :-) It is an 'Anna' apple (not Ana) and it is not self-fertile (self-fertile with apples is a joke - no such thing!) and was bred specifically to be productive in almost tropical areas. Only requires 300 or so chill hours, which means it needs winter temps below 45F for at least 300 hours during dormancy and that should not be difficult to achieve in your zone (we get more than enough in my zone 9a).

ken.....really?? Deciduous just means it dropped its leaves in winter. And the OP stated it was planted in September.

I don't have a firm explanation for the rebloom except the reason usually given for an out of season bloom on fruit trees is some sort of environmental stressor - drought, extreme heat, etc.

Can you provide photos? There may well be an apple or two developing but unless you have a pollination partner, you will never get a proper crop of apples.

Thanks everyone for the responses! For whatever reason it won’t let me add pics… it crashes when I click to add. I thought it was normal for apples to loose their leaves..? I noticed today the blooms appear on the branches with fewer leaves.. and all of them are turning into apples..?! The tree is only 4ft and has about 15 apples forming!? This is the strangest (yet best) thing lol. My Bing cherry seems to be reblooming now also after it already gave cherries!

It is normal for apples to lose their leaves in winter. They are deciduous. I think the phrase ’went’ deciduous was what caused the confusion.
