Comments (38)I love creeping phlox and envy my neighbors who have swaths of it draping over walls! I have neither decent phlox nor a wall to drape it over lol. So today I did something I've never done in my gardening life. I went to the garden center and bought some annuals before Mother's Day. I don't usually do this because it's just way too early here. But the last few years one can go first thing in the morning the day after Mother's Day and there is nothing left. I don't know if it's a supply issue or the supposed new hordes of gardeners since the pandemic, or a combination of both. So by the time I usually go, early June, there's definitely nothing left. So I bought a few annuals for my pots, and then got home and tried to figure out how to keep them. This was my solution: The frame contributes nothing lol. It was an old cold frame I dragged out, hoping to start my dahlia tubers early, only to find out after dragging a window from the very back of the garage that the window is too small to cover the frame. So the frame is there till I find another window or decide to move the frame back. But my setup is a plastic bin upside down. Right now I have it propped up on bricks, because the sun IS warm, although the wind is horrifically cold - worked outside in my winter coat and a hat today! Tonight I'll go remove the bricks (or pop them under and inside the bin for some radiant heat. I have a smaller bin all ready to go over that flat of impatiens, with two containers of water for radiant heat as well. I think it's probably overkill - it's supposed to be about 40 degrees tonight - but these babies were in a very warm green house so I don't want them going into shock lol. So hopefully I'll get them through next week and the danger of frost! Also, here's a pic of my Quail daffodils. Love these late little bloomers! :) Dee...See MoreYour MAY 2022 highlights
Comments (64)"What is the tree that ‘Sum & Substance is planted under? Could it be a Cercis ‘Forest Pansy’? Such unusual heart shaped leaves. And those hostas really are huge. You have such a nice large property. Looks like a LOT to take care of, I don’t know how you gardeners with large properties do it!" Yes, a Forest Pansy. I "do it" (this year anyway) by taking my photos from afar so you can't see the weeding I'm behind on. It's all I really do from April through October, am retired now. My May standouts this year have been all foliage related. I put in several Spirea 'Candlelight' on the back side of my perennial bed that you don't always see. Well the new growth was astoundingly gorgeous butter yellow that contrasted so nicely with the creeping phlox blooming around it. The 'Little Honey' oakleaf hydrangea is bright yellow, the new growth on the conifers is SO gorgeous, the new Acer leaves, my variegated Kousa dogwoods, the gold Hakone, the 'Sun King' aralia. Even the very plain green growth on everything is so new and lush and verdant- it all just screams fresh new start in May. I love my blooms, I do- my group of 'Blueberry Bliss' Irises is a showstopper in May. But the leaves, the foliage- it's all so perfect this time of year that I really try to appreciate it before the bugs and summer heat tire it all out. I'm getting up there and trying to take in every moment I have outdoors and staring at foliage has to be one of the favorite things I do. We have undeveloped property beyond the fencing and we sit back there just taking it in- I can lose hours staring at the woods. I think the Japanese even call it forest bathing, so it's not wasted time to me, it's why I enjoy living so much....See MoreJuly 2022, Building a Home
Comments (596)Thanks Keen! My builder will custom size mirrors, but I really want black metal and then champagne bronze and with rounded edges. So I think buying is my only option :/ K H - thank you for sharing that! @gerard - This is off topic, but if you need larger font there are options on your phone/iPad/computer to be able to enlarge (my husband has to do this!). @t_wag - Fair point! I think my lights are around 10”, so I’d end up with a bit of overlap, but not horrible I suppose....See MoreVeggie Tales - July 2022
Comments (143)We just got 1.25" of rain over the past hour and it looks l like another wash out knocking on the door. These storms just pop up like toast. I wished for rain but that 1.25" is enough for now thx :-). I'll need to go out after this next batch and pick the thin skinned heirlooms which are showing any color. Need to do some more melon thumping too. Glad it's raining though, if any melons split open there are many more young ones out there which will benefit greatly from more rain.....Lightning looming, better hit submit.......See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
