FWIW, we looked at double pendant fixtures for our island, but with 8 foot ceilings, the lights would have been too low. This is because the hanging structures for doubles are generally not adjustable for height. Ultimately, we just hung two pendants, separately: These are Restoration Hardware Clemsons, which we got at their outlet store for less than half price. We did look at the all-metal ones like you prefer, and they are stunning, but we wanted the light that is thrown out of the top of the Clemsons (due to the glass shade).

If you are planning an island then try to make the size that will allow you to have 3.6 feet all around and enjoy what you have to work with. The lighting position can be 12 inch centers from cabinet faces to wash color on the cabinets and bring out detail....try for spacing centered on the cabinets around the perimeter of the room. The lights need to be colors that work with the cabinets to make them look good....over the island you might want bright LED to give maximum work light.....lastly puck type lights under cabinets on the perimeter to make the back splash shine. Inspiration or possible rooms that might be what you are trying to envision. Candice Olson has a book about kitchens and bathrooms you can find online or in the library. She discusses recessed lighting in the kitchens I believe and online on her design site. Good luck.

We also have a two island kitchen and love it. We entertain frequently and all family get together's have been moved to our house since we built. It's nice to have an island that is dedicated to food prep and cooking, while the other island is dedicated to platters brought by guests, setting up a drink station, leaning on to talk to someone, walking around, etc. The kitchen is the heart of our home and we find that even when I'm not cooking, it's where people gravitate to. Even when we're not entertaining, I cook almost every meal from scratch, so we designed the kitchen with that in mind. The one comment I have on "tiring" of something is that I found after designing and building our home (which I thoroughly enjoyed and wanted to do again immediately after finishing) is that there are always "what ifs" or "we could have done it this way, or that way" or "next time"... It's not that I don't like our current design choices, it's just that my mind is always wondering. If I had to the opportunity, I may do it differently, I may not.. it would depend on how our life was structured at the time and the foreseeable future. I actually agree with Sophie (is the sky falling?!?) - design for how you really live. And if you like 2 islands, build 2 islands.
