Layering clematis integrifolia?

I have a clematis integrifolia 'Juuli' that I planted (years ago) too close to a hydrangea 'Quick Fire' and I'd like to "move" it over a few feet. Can I do this by layering a few stems at a time in the direction I want it to go?

Alternatively, I could transplant it in the fall or spring, but I'd hate to risk losing it. Any thoughts from someone more experienced than I am with these?

Editing to add that it's not a huge, robust plant like 'Roguchi" or I'd just dig out a chunk. It probably only has five stems - suffering from some neglect over the past few years.

Unless a massively old and very woody specimen (which integrifolias are not), they can be transplanted relatively easily. I've moved a bunch of them over the years :-) But I'd wait until fall.

i would leave it until late next winter when it is dormant. You can move it now, but it may not bloom as much as it would if it remained stationary... I am always moving things and that has been my experience... Sometimes they just pull back down and go to growing roots entirely. Salvia are not heavy feeders. I would just cut them back like you said

Poison ivy has "leaves of three" Clematis are supposed to be "vine-ish" They don't always take off on their third year. Many of mine waited longer....It is normal for them to grow bigger and longer every year as they get older until they reach mature size.

Thanks, both of you. I take it, then, that there are no special instructions for cuttings from herbaceous clematis? Bob, I thought of layering as well, but I understand that that method is slower and most successful if the stems survive the winter (e.g. C. alpina). Since C. integrifolia dies to the ground during winter, I didn't think it was an option. It probably wouldn't hurt to try, though. Thanks, again, for the advice. I'd still love to hear from anyone who's actually propagated C. integrifolia successfully!!
