A picture of the house..........the COLOR of the house...SOMETHING

I can upload a picture of my house, but I am going to paint the whole house so that's why I didn't post it. The first picture is my house now and the second is the color scheme I am painting it, aside from the windows being black in the second one, they will remain white. We also think we will replace the post with bigger post and stain them to match a wood door (dark stain). However, the door we have now I am going to paint it tricorn black SW until we can afford a wood door.

What is the color you have chosen for the body of the house. Your inspiration photo isn't showing white clapboard, nor is the roof the same color as yours. You must keep the roof in mind when choosing paint colors.

I never heard that you can't use a pure white on the exterior. My house is B.M. Super White in the exterior soft gloss finish.

Just match the white trim t o the v inyl. Theres not enough trim to worry about, and is on the thin side. Windows will look better and more substantial if windows/trim are the same color. The brighter white will provide more contrast with the body of the house which could be a good thing.

We are deciding on mindful gray SW or Dorian gray -same color just darker than mindful gray. Our roof is black gray, so not as stark black as the photo attached. I was just told if you have the wrong white it will be blinding when the sun directly hits it and I just didn't want to blind people when they try looking at the house.

Sarah, we went through exterior color choices a few months ago. Mindful Gray and Dorian Gray were on our list. For trim, we were told Pure White or High Reflective White would both be good options. In our case we ended up with Repose Gray since I wanted to keep it light.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Bright White trim.

Do you know what gray that is? I know computer screens make it hard to know for sure.

Love that house from Beverly! It's from a blog I like, and the white trim is BM Decorator's White. Siding is James Hardie Aged Pewter.

Dorian Gray leans a little on the lavender side, so make sure you get a sample to try. They paired it with Westhighland White.

Pure White is fine.

Try a sample of Seapearl and Simply White. they are nice, neutral whites.

I used Behr Swiss Coffee on mine (and I have those white vinyl windows) and it's a nice white. not blue, not yellow. The fascia trim is Platinum and the darker trim is BM Wrought Iron.

are you tackling any of the landscape? painting alone is fine, but I think if you made some flower beds under those windows, maybe replaced the posts w/cedar, and did a type of walkway, it would take it up quite a bit.

here are pics of similar brick ranch homes w/your layout. pay attention to all of the flower beds and the walkways. (most of the colors are white w/darker trim, updated front door, lighting, address plaques).

one example. this porch is almost like yours. look at how the paved it w/the brick and curved it out toward the driveway. (with an updated garage door). In that center they did a nice flower bed w/low plants and flowers. ditto for flower bed off to the right under the windows. You should consider this

you have a similar porch to this. look at the hardscape path along w/flower beds. having grass right up to the foundation doesn't do much for curb appeal

ignore the shutters on these pics. you don't have the right window set up for shutters, so ust look at the other elements.

this window is similar to yours. I like what they've done here w/the charcoal color and the white brick. love the front door, and the cement paver walkway.

Thank you Beth. We are actually planning on changing the post to bigger stained posts and will eventually buy a wood front door. I really like gray, so I would keep the windows white. I have lifetime warranty on windows so I do not want to paint them. We also have a few houses on our block that are white / cream / beige so I wanted to stay away from those exterior colors. I'm not sure on what gray to pick as my house faces east so most of the day it is shaded. Grays can fall flat in the shade or gloomy. This is the look I like with a little less wood. Mostly just the posts and the door, maybe garage doors but that would be way down the line. We are also going to add a walkway and flowers under the windows to get rid of the huge gap.

This was my house until last week. Thankfully we were able to change the ugly roof color. We have been wanting to paint for awhile but it has been hard with the roof that redish color. Amazing how different the house looks with just a new roof color.

As for the house colors I posted, I mainly posted those pics so you could see the landscaping options, mainly flower beds under the windows where you have grass.

The gray you're showing me is on a shingle. if you want that color gray, then try going w/some of these.

If you want something like dorian, try white flour or iron ore .

But since you face east, you're going to get cooler light. Dorian can turn lavender-ish. have you actually painted a sample to test it?

I'd go w/one of the warmer grays. With the cooler eastern light, it's going to look a bit better.

Try this combo but w/Simply White instead of Light Buff.

or, try this one. eider white is a grayish white, but you could substitute Pure White and get a nice contrast

Okay I have contemplated on a few of these. I was leaning more towards mindful gray as it is one shade lighter than dorian. I do not want purple so thank you. I can handle a litte green or maybe blue but no purple. I like revere pewter and the Chelsea gray. Would either of those trim colors clash with the bight white vinyl windows?

(no, none of those your mentioned would clash w/your windows. I've linked quite a few articles for you to read. give them a shot first, and then come back if you have questions)

• East-facing morning light is bright and will make paint colours look MUCH lighter than they will in the afternoon
• An east-facing afternoon will look an AWFUL lot like a north-facing one in that it gets NO sunshine and no shadows. It’s also similar to a west-facing morning light – flatter than a pancake
• In the afternoon, east-facing homes can look more shaded – more like they do on the north-facing side (or western morning)
• With east-facing light being tricky, you’ll want to pay attention to the LRV that you choose. This way, you can land on an LRV that doesn’t wash-out too much in the morning, but also doesn’t look too heavy in the afternoon.

Yes, I love reading her articles. This is what made me have a hard time picking a color. She states grays are hard to find on east and west facing houses as they can look grungy or flat. They also can pull some of the unwanted undertones. I will just go get a few samples and see how they look throughout the day. Thank you for your help!

east can be tricky. read the link up there on the LRV. that's what you have to pay attention to so it won't go flat on you in the afternoon.

I love Chelsea Gray. (chelsea on the body, and WEstchester around the window trim, the white on the roof fascia would be perfect) it has more of a yellow undertone rather than blue or purple, so you should be fine.

The last link I posted in my other comment is all of the gray colors she reviews. I'd read through some of those and see which LRV would work w/the east direction.

I'd also refinish your cedar fence and think about doing the cedar posts to warm it up. what about your garage doors? do you like the darker colors for those?
