Is this granite removable?

I just noved into this house and im planning on switching the counter tops, but the one on the hutch its attached to the cabinets above. is this possible to take out?

My experience with granite counter tops is that they are held in place with multiple dabs of silicone caulk placed on the top of the cabinet boxes before placing the granite. With the doors open and the drawers removed, if you use a small putty knife you should be able to go inside the cabinet and carefully separate/cut the silicone bonding the granite to the cabinet. Save the current granite for the new granite installers, it can be used for a template to cut the new top.

I wouldnt touch it without a waiver that acknowledges the hgh potential for damaging the cabinets if they are not removed. The granite is likely to break as well. No stone fabricator is going to want to template with the cabinets in place, or use the old piece as a pattern. Houses shift, and walls and cabinets move. Stone constricts some of that movement, until it is removed. “Exact same sized” things do not go back in the same place, as that shape changes when things are removed.

The OP might do well to consider moving the material around to make mounds, berms and trenches. Doing so he/she could create places to bring in soil for beds for particular types of gardening. Although I haven't worked much with decomposed granite myself, I think that it will support many types of plants as it is. But those plants that need a different soil can be nurtured with imported clay soils. In Alaska last year, I helped make some garden beds built up on a rock and gravel fill. The location was a beach that had been built up with a boulder retaining wall and backfilled. The 'soil' was very 'young', full of stuff like decomposed granite. After making the raised beds (we used a chainsaw mill to make the boards from yellow cedar), we filled them with whatever soil we could scratch up. We screened the soil to remove the stones and used the stones between the beds for walking paths. Hard work. Some vegetables did ok in that raw soil, and cold wet climate; lettuce and radish for example. We used kelp, sawdust, and humus from the forest as mulch and soil amendments. Very different than the clay back here in Boise. I wonder what climate the OP lives in.

I know how much the fabricators hate having to redo a job. We just finalized our decision today after several weeks of trying to figure it out. The rep with the fabricator has been patient and good to work with, but all along the way, any time I have had a $ question, he's kept words and phrases at the front to let me know that his first obligation is to make $ for the company... got to "keep profitability in mind", "pay the light bills", etc. I'm OK with that; they have to decide whether they are willing to take on a particular stone's liability. From all that he has said to me, I am so surprised to hear about the carelessness of some of the fabricators out there about making sure they listen to the homeowner and measure and cut and seam with more trepidation. I don't paint them all with the same brush (Kevin) but I will be nervous until ours goes in and I see that it is done correctly. I hope my fabricator was right when he told me we would be very very happy that we chose them. I hope you will be able to say the same thing when it's all over, hgluckman... or at least that you are very very happy with the end result.

Nice work, great salvage! My husband drove an old BMW 2002 for years that he received as payment for a job. He restored it mechanically and eventually sold it to a guy who finished the interior/exterior work. The guy still drives it on weekends, not bad for a car that's almost 40 years old! Huffing granite, now that's funny!

From your photo this looks like a protective coating or some cleaning product was applied to the honed finish, possibly being the wrong kind/type? Joseph is right, I wouldn't remove these, you will cause yourself more trouble. Honed finishes are not very forgiving either, so not sure what the real problem is?

I think you'd have to disassemble the upper structure in order to replace the top. The cabinets should be screwed together but the crown and other trim are probably nailed, and will be subject to damage.
