DIY Landscape Design Design Dilemma

Help me boost my curb appeal!

Hello!
I’m looking to get a new front door and complete other upgrades to the exterior to boost curb appeal. Any affordable suggestions (color/style of door, portico, shutters, landscaping, etc.) with pics to help? I cannot do any major renovations right now. I’m assuming this house is considered a colonial…..

I would remove the shutters. They don't belong on double windows. New panel door paint it black. Paint garage doors all gray. A local nursey can help you decide on plant material best suited for your local and with a design

If you want to keep shutters, they can be wider. I would paint the garage doors to match the siding. Also like the black front door.

Yes. I've saved all the suggestion pictures. My husband and I are going to sit down and try to draw out what we are thinking for the landscaping (location, colors, etc). I'd like to lay it out so that it's ready for the addition of the walkway. We aren't going to be able to replace the front door at the moment. Is paint a terrible idea for a short-term upgrade? If paint is an option, what are your thoughts on paint color for the door? And the shutters....I'm not 100% sold on removing them (we are in south Ga so the shutters keep the southern feel). If we keep shutters, do you have a suggestion on color? I want the front of the house to really pop.

Following up on Addie's idea, if you want to designate an area for the pool and incorporate it into your landscape, why not? Then in spring and fall it could be your campfire area, and in winter you could put holiday decorations there. But my first item on the priority list would be a privacy fence. Frankly your house looks fine/wonderful to me but if you have no back yard and are wanting to get the most use out of your front yard with kids, etc. then start with a GOOD fence. It is not inexpensive. Then just prune a bit or refresh what you have. And for what it's worth, I think the tree looks like it is hugging your house, in a good way! Plus if I was a kid I would be up that tree in a New York minute. :) You don't need to do it all at once! And you can get a lot of plants and other things bit by bit as they come on sale or even for free from friends or neighbors who are cleaning up. Do the big important thing (fence) with a lot of planning and don't skimp on the money and the rest will come from your enjoyment of your private space as time and cash allows.

Savita, I don't know if I'd do anything to the brick on the right. I can't see it well enough. If the brick can be matched, I might use it in redesigning the front porch and steps. This is where a designer on site could really be a help.

Nice home and yard. Connecting the front porch and back deck would be a great idea. You definitely will need a railing on the part of the side porch/deck that is higher than a step off the ground (except for where you are adding steps). Instead of extending the side porch as a porch, extend the deck about 6'-8' deep on the side and match the existing deck and railing materials as closely as possible. Then, after you remove the front porch railing, clad the front porch posts to better match the deck railing as well. As you do this, at or near the corner, create a side entrance or even a gazebo . Agree the shutters should go. Definitely match garage doors to siding. P Banos’ example of garage doors with windows is nice. The black door looks good. Maybe a wide black trim for the upper windows if the shutters go.

I would buy a lot of very low floppy plants to soften the hard outlines of your flower beds. You don’t need to cover the entire outlines. Just spot plant some masses of greenery or little blooming flowers (like impantiens or pansies) at a few places around the perimeter (at 3 o’clock, 5 o’clock, 8 o’clock — if you know what I mean. Just something to spill over some edges.

Hard to say without standing right there but darker mulch in the beds might make them more handsome, not look dried out, and trimming down those bushes right at the foundation line might add to the feeling of ”well maintained house”.

If your street address is 3 numbers or less, consider putting it on the portico in easy-to-see black metal italic letters

Painting the garage doors to match the siding and upgrading the flower beds would make a major difference. I think a solid front door would do better since you already have lots of glass on the facade. I would have preferred a wider portico, but I don't think its worth the expense of a new one. I would put large house numbers vertically on the far right side of the garage where you have a bit more space.
