Layout help: kitchen & dining room combined
Comments (20)Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions. Sorry it took us a while to respond, it takes a weekend for us to have enough hands to work on this and take care of a very active kid. We’re long-time lurkers here, so the FAQs are familiar and we used them, and some of the other internet lists of dimensions, in our planning. Benjesbride – thanks for posting the layouts; I’d run out of space by the time I’d pasted in that huge description and gardenweb would only let me include links. I’m reposting the diagrams somewhere more useful, and will add a few more in a moment. Buehl – yeah, we agree that less than 12” next to the range is too tight, which is why we’re here :). I went back and relabeled the diagrams to ensure we had the right measurements. Turns out we had missed 2 extra inches in width (it’s 160 not 158 – which makes sense as it’s a rounder #) – doesn’t help the range situation, but will help in other ways. I’ve also labeled everything down to the other end of the room, as I hadn’t expected someone (sena01) actually trying to render the whole layout for us. It’s a big room, fitting 60” of range shouldn’t be this hard, but really what we want is 96” of range+counter (18+60+18), and that’s trickier. Debbie B. – we are having fun with the space, and hope to have fun in the space. I’m sure there’ll be another kid down the road, and they’ll be expected to participate in cooking. My wife was cooking early, so it’s family tradition. I suspect, however, we’ll have them help from outside the work aisle. Funkycamper – buffet/butlery is the area left of the fireplace, 15-24” depth with the extra sink in pictures 1 & 2. Sena01 – thank you for all your thoughts on our layouts, and your recommendations. We hadn’t thought of switching the pantry door and it may be worth doing. It’ll depend a lot on whether we put cabinets on that wall (12” or 15”, as you’ll see in a moment we think there’s enough room). The closet isn’t quite wide enough to walk into so if we put cabinets there it probably makes more sense to have 2 shallow storage spaces rather than one extra-deep one. If we don’t put cabinets there, flipping it around makes a lot of sense (though visually it creates a row of doors). I’d also tried for a while to figure out if I could use its space for the fridge. I like the idea of the corner-sink. My biggest concern is the proximity of the range to the windows on either side (3”). I’d read that there may be limits on how close a range can be – any ideas? I notice you have relatively wide aisles in the layout, and I think there’s actually more width to the room that we could play with in your design. We tried it out one night this week and are entirely comfortable with a 41” work aisle. The passthrough aisle seems OK at 41, provided there’s no fridge on that wall. Comments (14)I'm not a layout pro and it sounds like you have a solution you like. Just wanted to follow up on the tall family comment you made: my family is tall too, and when we did a kitchen renovation (and updated all our bathrooms at the same time) we raised all our counters to 39". It is SO much more comfortable for us to work in the kitchen! (And wash our faces too. No more bathroom sinks practically at knee height.) Added bonus: the taller base cabinets give us more storage space. So if you're lucky enough to do custom cabinets, I hope you consider taller base cabs. Even without custom, you can consider taller toe kicks to lift things up a bit. Even an inch or two might make a difference in your comfort....See MoreKitchen,Work Kitchen,Laundry,Dining area Layout
Comments (8)Hello Everyone. I appreciate your feedback very much. Thank you. To answer your question. -Shape of the plot is triangular. We know it is not ideal and we have to work with it. House is 5.75 meters wide x 16.51 meters long. House is in the city. We will be the only house in radios 2KM who will have carport on their property. -2 kitchens, I kind of like the idea to have preparation kitchen, where I have all my accessories (kitchen aid) reachable. I do make my own bread, pasta, mince meat...etc -3 as you can see we do not have outdoor space. So we are trying to make something from nothing. Use it as well as we can. We used Houzz idea to cover the patio to create shield against sun and rain. (heat window) -4 work Kitchen area will not have windows only sky light. And work kitchen will have only small window or door from Carport. Laundry, (Mud room) Washing and drying clothes, storage...etc and will most likely take of shoes in this area. Work kitchen. We bring shopping and store it here. Kitchen (stuff that needs to go to fridge will end up here) another version -5 so what now guys? any ideas for improvement?...See Moremodern cottage/waterfront kitchen, dining, bedroom and bath layout
Comments (3)I like the your style and you have noticeably given the space planning much thought. I miss my lake camp and can relate to your comments completely. Of course you need a local architect/contractor, as is seems the existing kitchen wall is structural. I've taken that into consideration with the layout. The bedroom entrances should be tucked away and not off the main living area, especially by the kitchen. Allow for a small vestibule into the primary bedroom and relocate the entrance to the guest room. I always liked the design and function of built in closets around the headboard and love your inspiration pic, The cabinets indicated in the primary bedroom are a full wall of 54" high drawer cabinets. You may consider doing that in the guest room also and eliminating the guest room closet altogether. The powder room in the back near the stairs should be eliminated and replaced with a full bath. The existing kitchen can be a bar/butlers pantry incorporating the refrigerator with a small wall of pantry closets across. The piece de resistance is the staircase you indicated. Here is my all time favorite staircase by Borsani in Milan. It's a sculpture, isn't it?! Consider extending the flooring from under the stair all the way to the end of the butlers pantry (to include the entrance to the guest room). Turn the stairs as shown in the pic. Gorgeous. I would love to see what your process is doing your design project and the final design. I'm following.
