I agree that it is most likely that cucumber beetles introduced bacterial wilt to your cucumbers. The disease is not in your soil, it's in the beetles. There is no cure. You can only prevent the problem by choosing resistant varieties and using an appropriate insecticide from the beginning. I had the same problem with my cucumbers until I grew Diva cucumbers, which are supposed to be unappealing to the beetles, and started spraying regularly with spinosad. I never saw the beetles on my cucumbers, but I did see a few on other plants. Cucumbers grow fast, so you can choose a resistant variety and start over. Ego...thanks so much for that info. Unfortunately, although I normally procrastinate a lot longer, this time I went right out and dug it up and out it came. Well, I probably would have done that anyway. I do garden organically and have not used a fungicide in 30 yrs living here. I didn't enjoy pulling it but I had another healthy one a short distance away and I was afraid it might spread. This will be my first year with peony blooms. I planted both plants late last spring and one plant had one bloom on it when I bought it. This year there are about 8 buds on it, so I am very pleased. I am going to leave that spot vacant for the season and will just enjoy the one I have this year. Hope the groundhog damage has shown some grow back for you. I think of you every time I hear a groundhog story and feel very sad after all the hard work you put into your lovely garden that you have lost so many plants this year. If only the Green Zebras are wilting and all other plants are not, under the same conditions, and if the other person who bought the same plants from the same nursery and is having the same problems, then that suggests to me the possibility that the seeds used for GZ were contaminated with a seedborne disease. There are all sorts of weather related situations that can cause wilting, but you've clearly said that all other plants are OK. Foliage diseases do not cause wilting, but systemic diseases can cause wilting. So can pathogenic nematode infections but this is a new bed and nematodes are not seedborne. And if it is a systemic disease infection, such as Fusarium for instance, if it were me I'd pull out those two plants ASAP so that there's minimal contamination of the soil in that bed. I admit that I didn't look at the pictures or what you posted elsewhere b'c of your saying that the wilt was only with GZ and that another person with GZ from the same nursery was having the same wilt problem. Appear to be aphids, most of them tan-colored and papery. If so, the latter are evidence of very active naturally occurring biological control at your place.
